So, we can slot this in straight after the cockpit compo, say? I have an idea for it now

I take it you've never played Radical Dreamers?

But that's a visual novel... although I'm sure it would be fine in a compo, I wouldn't normally consider it IF.

Personally I would. It's just the same as the "Choose your own adventure" books. I view IF as anything where the gameplay is only typing commands, or choosing a path. That's just me though.

What are the requirements for an IF? Just to make sure. Is it like Choose Your Own Adventures?

What is an IF?To answer your question, interactive fictions usually allow for you to type in whatever you want to play the game and are usually made in IF software such as Inform. If it is like a Choose Your Own Adventure, it's called a hypertext fiction/narrative. There are also visual novels, which are hard to explain succinctly but have a good article on Wikipedia. Since this is a Tigsource compo, I expect any of these would be fine, along with anything else similar you can think of.

Isn't there already an IF annual competition?Edit: then again, I could see a compo for 'games inspired by known IF games' - any classic IF games like Infocom's A Mind Forever Voyaging, or reasonably famous IF games like Graham Nelson's 'Curses'.

I think that a Tigsource IF compo could be fun, though, and it might help a lot of people get interested in IF.

I would love to get into this one, I'm a pretty good writer, if I may say so myself.

Agreed -- there are many IF compos throughout the year, with games usually made in Inform, Tads, Adrift and so forth. Many of these compos happily accept games made with other tools but it rarely happens simply because the IF community is centered on a particular set of tools. I think a TIGs IF compo would be a fine melting pot for all different kinds of IF games and it would be something of a step backward to define the genre too narrowly.

I think an IF compo would be nice, if only for the fact that Inform 7 allows most people to join even if they're complete newbies to game development.
