Last week I had submitted my first game to Steam Greenlight, "Just a Cleric". I'm posting this here in the play testing section now because there's a short 5 mission demo now available to check out. So far the feedback for this has been positive but anything you have to add would be much appreciated. For example, one guy mentioned that your starting gear might come auto equipped after the story screen. (What do you think as well for this?)

ABOUT:

Ahhhh the cleric. Trusty healer, smiter of the undead, the guy with big G's ear. The cornerstone of any successful adventuring party to be sure. I now take you to one such adventuring party not far from here in the forest. They've just bested some unruly ogres and are feeling pretty good about themselves. Well, most of them anyway...

"Just a Cleric" is my new retro-styled action RPG. Become the titular wussy cleric himself and set out to avenge your fallen comrades by attempting to do what no cleric before you has ever done: CLERIC DE COMMANDO.

Take up missions at the town's pub and accomplish quests ranging from killing a giant cricket to reviving some dead guys who didn't pay their bills. Gather a plethora of cool gear to equip yourself like armor, maces, and flails or try your hand at other most decidedly NON CLERIC-Y stuff like battleaxes and bow and arrows. Upgrade them further through the town's blacksmith or even bless the strongest at the central church. By killing monsters and completing quests you'll gain experience levels and learn powerful prayers to use like Fryar Fry, Priestly Pyro, and Undead Bane.

Raise your stats however you see fit, as each hold equal weight in the AVENUES OF ADVENTURING. Strength not only makes swords and axes hit harder, you'll become much more adept at landing critical hits and blocking with shields. Luck raises damage for daggers and crossbows, increases the odds of chest traps not occuring, and aids in enemy loot drops. Constitution is the only way to increase your maximum HP as well as bolsters both your physical defense and spell resistance. Or you could always go the way of the cleric and pump points into faith. This allows for faster PP (Prayer Point) regeneration, higher damage from staves and flails, and SIGNIFICANTLY STRONGER prayers.

The choice is up to you!

Can the wussy cleric overcome COUNTLESS ODDS and break- or embrace- his HEALEY tropes?
Or is he gonna' die?


OTHER FEATURES:

*An UNUSUAL all-real instrument soundtrack by The Booger Myers Band.
*New Game+ upon victory, with new enemies, better possible gold loot, and harder bosses with different abilities.
*THREE save files. That's two more than ONE save file!
*A hardcore option that's just ridiculous so don't try it.
*Keyboad and Joystick support.

Did you try the demo?

I made some changes and an addition to the core game yesterday:

The option to skip the intro
Starting gear is auto equipped at the beginning
Re-added a line in the intro I somehow took out before

New mission. The gist is Del Duio (the blue cleric) is always called upon Fridays to open the church pickle jar for lunch but he never can and they all laugh at him. You are hired to break into the churchy pickle reserves and break every jar of pickles in the joint in 30 seconds or less. Do this, and Del Duio will never be put on the spot Friday lunchtime again. Fail, and he'll discover a living hell on earth; doomed to not open pickle jars for the rest of his days.

It came out really cool. And it's actually harder than it sounds as you have you use your weapons, prayers, and nifty moves to bust all the jars open.

Are you using a game pad? If so it has to be plugged into the computer before you load the game (a quirk of MMF).
Nobody's said the controls haven't worked yet so I want to get to the bottom of this quick!

P.S: last night I re-uploaded the demo with some minor but good changes:
Attack is now X
Jump is now Z
You can skip the intro story if you want
Also there's 1 more line in the story I somehow removed before

Aw, nuts.

Somebody else had the same problem you did, where it was stuck on the file select screen. It must've had something to do with the update but I never changed the file select screen and it worked when I tried it last night.

Regardless, I'll look into this when I get home and make the appropriate fixes. Sorry about that.

EDIT: Now others say it works, go figure. ''X" is the attack / action key and 'Z' is for jump.

Well that was interesting!

Looks like the demo works okay, but I was able to figure out what happened to you, Corbralad, by duplicating the situation you got. When I ran the game with a gamepad plugged in, but tried to use the keyboard controls for it, it was unresponsive except for the "Q" key (auto quits the game). To solve the issue, either use the game pad or unplug it and re-run the .exe and it'll work.

Just played it on my Win 8 laptop and Win 7 a little while ago and the game runs as intended.

That was a weird one alright.

Thanks for letting me know, and if anybody else can verify the updated demo works for them it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the process of making a post-game optional super boss for JAC.

It's basically a very hard  challenge for players to save up their best gear for and try out.
It has:

Limited invisibility
Stone skin / impervious to damage
Exploding lightning spears
Sleep / disease / poison attacks
A curse that seals your healing abilities
Unholy light pillar attack
Teleportation
Gravity well / hell gate to suck the player into
Summon lightning bolt (like one of the cleric's prayers)

I played a bit of the demo, and I really like the art, but the controls are a bit frustrating, and the dialog leaves a bit to be desired.  Also in the middle of playing I accidentally pressed "Q" and the game shut down instantly without any warning, which was frustrating.  Although like I said I like the art, and the game overall has a good  atmosphere.

The 'Q' key for the instant quit has since been changed in a recent patch to the ESC key (because some people playing with a keyboard were accidentally pressing it while going for the TAB key) The core game has a lot more to it, I hope you'll give it a shot   Not only are there a few confirmed dragonslayers on hand over on the JAC board, at least one has defeated the Super Boss and won my weapon contest.

I'm making an expansion to the game currently that will also be free to both old and new players alike. The weapon contest's winner has designed a weapon which will be a part of this, but I'm also planning some other cool stuff.

I' ve set up the soundtrack on the store page but that likely won't be ready for maybe another week.

I'm working on a free expansion for this, which of course will be retroactive for those who already own it.
I plan on this being out in maybe 2 weeks tops. It gives me another crack at some more music too!
