Camera has been since changed so it doesn't move with every jump.

Technology.  It's what puts us on top.  Some is basic, some complex, some built to last; some will outlast us, even once discarded.  Some is "smart", some are "Life Companions". Many use digital assistants daily that will be cast aside once a more capable device takes its place.  We aim to make technology better constantly and to make it self-organizing,..

What happens when we make technology even smarter, more human, more of a companion than ever and when it becomes no longer relevant for modern use, where does it go..?  How would we deal with disposing something that looks and acts just like us?

Meet Aarel,

She is 13 years old.  She's different but like anyone is trying to find her place, contribute, and just figure things out.  She resembles an ordinary studious school girl but is really something else; she has extraordinary amounts of energy and doesn't know her true power.

She is from a time of advancing technology.  It advanced so quickly that it caused problems and needed to be held back.

She was created just before then to be as human as possible; but only made it through the prototype stages before being scrapped as the world declared a creation like herself would be too much.

She was left wrecked, missed, lied about, stolen, sold, transported, modified, repaired,..?  There had been a period of ten years that are a mystery as to her whereabouts..

She resurfaced nearly thirteen years after being made.  Her technology is quite old after this much time but in many ways, less inhibited.  She becomes an immediate target of interest but manages to hide so she could reprint damages and now has run off, left to fend for herself!

She is docile by design but violence finds her and changes that were made to her put her on the offensive.  She is also equipped with an attached involuntary cannon which she would very much like to get rid of.

She believes she has a brother and is somewhat unable to grasp the concept of how much time has passed since they were both together as time isn't important to her.  She wishes to find him to restore herself, in hopes to replicate his conscience and go back to a factory state.

Little does she know, life will never be as planned for her...

She is positive and very goal oriented but has conflicting corrupted and damaged emotions which she keeps to herself until she can understand and trust others.  What people could ever realize from her as she learns from them is limitless.

-------------

This game is aimed at being action / casual.  It will play like a platformer but with dead simple controls.  There shouldn't have to be any knowledge of a story to pick it up and play but it helps in developing the environment.  It may or may not have dialogue though if so, it would likely be little.  The goal now is to start with a demo release on the PC and hope to expand from there.  The photos of the screenshots displayed at this time are of very early concept.

Next on the todo may be to unveil more of the detailed plot / profiling of Aarel and the large version of this story which is already written, if that's of interest.. But it's big!  Will also be working on creating a first level and assets for the game..  Thanks for reading Smiley

It's an unsuspecting 286, what do you mean?? Wink  Heheh, yeah the guts in it are an improved but still modest 10 year old dual-core.  May as well put it to use with this stuff Smiley.

It limps along with Win10 x64 but has some more oomph than the old laptop or eeePC :D.

If anyone's interested, there's another blog on a composers' site over here:

http://www.icompositions.com/artists/Aamp/entries.php?pid=10429

that is a little more from a personal standpoint and indirectly touches on the controls for this game a bit.  If you feel like reading it and want to sound off in the comments here if something seems intriguing, or with advice, that would be cool too!  The weather warming up here early may be detrimental to this with other pending projects but planning to keep this developing going!  Thanks for reading Smiley

We have gifs!

*Gif moved to first post

As you can probably tell, the main inspirations for this game are Street Fighter, Tetris, Sim City, and Golf for the Atari.

Actually, this game will be a lot about jumping and shooting and this is an early example of some of the control!  She's a mechanical runner but improvements will be made on that later Smiley.

-Updated first post to show latest gif and screenshots.
-Gameplay on speed run with no obstructions is 1:30 so far.
-8 bit soundtracks go well with this.  May need to add chip-ness to the music.
-Currently working on the graphics / framework to create a level.

Made some ice blocks to go with the white ground suggesting it being like snow; which is all going away here, thankfully!

Drew a quick car by using a photo of a sketch, then layering lines on top of it on the computer.

Thing is..  It should have been drawn sideways like this crappy spaceship:

As due to limitations of actually getting this game done, everything is flat like this.

For the characters to be plausible, the setting needs to be far in the future, far enough that nobody will give a crap if these things didn't really exist by then, so you can see that maybe this car which looks like a car of today would be like 70 years old.  Oops Tongue.  Looking at some other favourite games that take place way in the future, those cars don't look all that different from cars of today either so perhaps vehicle appearances eventually hit a plateau over time.  That, or some exterior hoses and random satellite dishes will need to be added.  To envision a car of the future, it would be self-driven by gps or whatever so it wouldn't need windows or lights or anything.  It might just be a featureless blob sitting curbside to be occupied by anyone like a taxi. Nobody owns one, they're just everywhere waiting to take you places.  Anyway, didn't mean to go off on a tangent.

It's interesting how the controls and needing to be able to know where to go are shaping the graphics for this; that and adding enough techno retro-futuristic junk all detailing and competing for the same plain while keeping defined paths is going to be challenging.

Thanks for reading Smiley

After learning some stuff, it was determined that a 1:1 camera to player movement vertically could be unsettling. This led to some work on one of the more procrastinated tasks. When the camera was changed to avoid this, the background continued to move with every jump of the player, as it was tied to their position. There was a problem with the background going over a ledge with the player too when falling off screen, which looked pretty funny.

The prior solution was to place tiles around pitfalls to hide this but the new solution was to have the background move vertically with the camera, but for whatever reason (too much stuff going on) due to the handling of the sun as an object rather than an image, there were lags and strange effects of the sun playing catch up with other movement.

Handling the sun as a sprite rather than a position sensing object solved the issue but now there were things that were already completed downstream of this change that had to be re-done. Using a trick that was learned while thinking outside of the box for an added player mechanic, the sun was able to achieve the same results as had before, but with way less stuff needed to do it, so a surprising amount of junk was able to be deleted.

In the end, what came as initial reluctance made for decent changes to the game!

It may or may not have dialogue though if so, it would likely be little.  The goal now is to start with a demo release on the PC...

Two years ago I started making this and it's randomly turned into a 'visual novel' now! Like, 30,000 words Droop

I'm pretty excited that this idea didn't just go to die Beer!

The working concept of Legacy Sisters™ is done and released!

Get it here, for Windows today - it's cute, has robots, and free!:

aamp.itch.io/legacy-sisters

A visual novel like story where technology advanced so quickly that nearly everybody has a personal pet robot - but when a robot rumoured to exist in the eighties surfaces resembling a human in every way possible, things get energetic!

-Contains coarse language and scenes with violence.

-Couple to a few hour read through.

-Save points.

-Version 1.0.

-Lots of music!

This story started with this DevLog and progressed into something entirely different!  Aarel is 18 in both age and appearance in this novel.  Cheers!   Toast Right
