I've made a few objects in Maya LT, but want to know what painting software you might suggest to port UVs over to in order to pain.

2D solutions - Photoshop, or Krita or FireAlpaca for free programs
3D solutions - Mudbox, ZBrush, Mari (Mudbox can be downloaded for free through Autodesk's Student Community if you qualify)

I've never found anything better than Photoshop (and I'd like to, because it's expensive!)

There's plenty of image editors but I always run into some bug or limitation that Photoshop doesn't have, and grudgingly go back.

Unfortunately Photoshop is expensive to me. Even if the lowest price is $10/month, I don't want to pay for it forever.
