Is there an API for playing pxtone music out there somewhere?  I know the source to Cave Story is floating around somewhere, and a few tigs members compose music with the sequencer...  It'd be pretty neat to see some games with native pxtone soundtracks.

It's available on Pixel's site as part of the pxTone distribution.

There's a header file and a lib in there. Windows only though it seems.

But as there are Mac ports of Cave Story I'm sure there'll be a go-to-guy who can help with that. For instance the dude who ported it to the Mac. Wink

I feel like there's a misconception in the undercurrent of this discussion so just as a reminder: Cave Story uses organya format for its music, not pxTone format. From what people were saying, it sounded like some people believed that maybe Cave Story used pxtone. Maybe not, but it seemed like that was the case, so, better to be safe on that one, I figured.

Just because Cave Story was ported to Mac/Linux doesn't mean that pxTone necessarily can be (without source files for the pxTone format, anyway). One might be able to port the API of pxTone based on what is provided with the API, but perhaps not the format itself, unless the API is the only aspect of pxTone that has platform dependencies.

Really, it all just depends on the availability of the source codes for the API and the format, I guess.

To be honest, I don't know anything about audio format programming, so I'll just stop myself here.
