I made a few small fixes (including making sure the "cancel" button is disallowed in every conversation choice menu so you can speed through with the cancel button without worrying about selecting anything), but I've mainly been busy with IRL stuff like finding a place to live.

But now I finally found a place so it's back to work! Next steps: last few fixes on the game, make more endings, and find interested Youtubers & write emails to them.

In order to find the Youtubers I'm searching for "Let's Plays" of similar games, such as these:

・Undertale
・Rakuen
・Earthbound
・Space Funeral
・Yume Nikki
・To The Moon
・Harvest Moon 64
・Animal Crossing
・Paladin's Quest
・Stardew Valley

But they're all kinda similar in different ways (either weird indie RPG, or games about friendship), so the ideal Youtuber would have played two or more from the list. Do you have ideas of any other Monster Garden-like games I could search for Let's Plays of?

Also, I'm getting roughly 100 visitors to my Steam page each day, and currently about 130 wishlistings.  Smiley  Gomez

Maybe some let's players that just play indie rpg maker games? I mean, with Yume Nikki and To the moon you're likely to find some of those anyway...

Pumpkin Noir is completely different from Monster Garden, except that is an rpg maker game with no battles (as far as I know) and that all characters are monsters (some can get pretty weird)!

Pumpkin Noir is completely different from Monster Garden, except that is an rpg maker game with no battles (as far as I know) and that all characters are monsters (some can get pretty weird)!

Pumpkin Noir looks awesome! I wanna play it! :D (Actually just downloaded it.)

And yea, "weird, short indie games" is my ultimate Let's Play genre, but I'm not sure of the best way to find them.

Since you said Yume Nikki, I assume you've heard of Off? It's a pretty interesting and weird rpg maker game (though completely unlike Monster Garden in tone and mechanics).

Wow, ManlyBadassHero is one of the few Youtubers I've identified so far, haha! And Off is really hard to search for because of the common word used for the name, but I've definitely checked it out before. Thanks for the ideas!

Phew, now that I finally have time for the game again, I finished the last three friendship endings (the ones for the Seedling 3 monsters). They were actually really fun to make, but it's unlikely anyone will see them since you basically have one shot at befriending them.

I feel like I've been talking about the next set of endings (for unique combos of monsters) forever with no progress, but now I can finally make them! ...As soon as I get Steam Achievements working. I think I at least wrapped my head around what needs to be done. There are many confusing steps to do it with an RPG Maker plugin...but I'm gonna try it Saturday and keep my fingers crossed!

Then just a few small last fixes on the game!

I compiled a list of 16 Youtubers that seem like they might like Monster Garden based on their other Let's Plays. 3 have over a million subscribers, 6 have hundreds of thousands, and 7 have less than a hundred thousand. I'd be shocked and overjoyed if any of them covered it, but I thought I should aim high since it at least seems like a good match. Smiley Wish me luck on trying to actually reach them.  Wink

Planning to contact them one month before release, which is what I heard is good timing. I'm fairly confident about it being bug free right now, but I still need to test more of course.

Luckily my game is pretty simple and at this point I'm mainly working on "superficial" things (in that they don't alter the basic game system, so they won't create a bug out of nowhere).

A few small but major changes. I found a way to show small portraits by each monster's name when choosing who to talk! No more having to memorize names!


I also added native heart icons so there are no garbled text problems with fonts on people's computers lacking hearts.

And I made the white diamond suck Mr. Bobo in to teleport at the beginning, which makes the transition a bit nicer.

Finally, I made characters at the party hold stock still until you talk to them, then they start walking around, so it is really clear who you have and haven't talked to.

NOW on to the endings. XD

I randomly did two tiny things I wanted to do:

・Make Leg Dog clearly separated, since people often thought it was a graphical glitch how his body separates. I'm actually not sure if I like it any better, which is why it wasn't at the top of my to-do list. So I learned my lesson about jumping ahead to do non-essential things. Cry WTF Gomez

・Also made it possible to talk to Drizzy just before the end of Seedling 1, where he hints that you can recruit him by rejecting other characters.

And then:
・Added a brief ending with Bobo if you "beat" the game (completed Seedling 3, which requires the first two to also be beat), where he describes your garden based on four hidden variables.
・Added an ending where all the Bobos hang out if you recruited and befriended one of them at the end of Seedling 3.

Now I just have to add an ending for Doofter and then FINALLY all the main characters have friendship endings.
Then I selected three multi-character endings that include all characters somewhere in them. I'd ideally like to add more, but those are the minimum to cover all the bases.

Also Steam approved my game to be released, so now it's just a matter of making sure achievements are working and then waiting until Feb. 8th.
Speaking of achievements, I could simulate New Game+ by checking if an achievement has been achieved...but I dunno.
And I was thinking of making all the achievements hidden to keep things mysterious, how I like it (and how most people don't like it, I know Wink)...

Finally got Steam achievements working! It was complicated (especially for Macs, since most documentation is for PCs). But everything seems to work now, just gotta go through and unlock every achievement to make sure.

Besides that I did a bunch of small things with making secondary NPCs sound more interesting, and bug fixing.

Then a friend had a nice microphone so we recorded some sounds, mainly some for Mr. Bobo, which is the last thing the game needed. Gotta insert those, and that will be the last truly essential feature to be added!

I guess it's all finally coming together...and just in the nick of time!  Gomez

Spent a day playing through the game a million times, and found bugs and fixed them on the spot, which was really nice (instead of just building up a longer and longer list of bugs to do "later").

Then I recorded MORE noises, which I just finished dividing and polishing, and now gotta insert them all in the game. Which I wanna do before I go home for Christmas, so basically do it all tomorrow.  Shocked

Cool, Yume Nikki is definitely an interesting and inspiring game. Smiley

I just prepared emails to send five Let's Players and six journalists with Steam keys on January 8th, a month before release. Woot. Now back to making sure the game is absolutely  and completely bug-free.  Shocked Gomez

Almost a month til release!

I replayed the game a bunch  to make sure there are no bugs. Found one with the Drizzy-themed party (which I have never seen anyone actually get lol).

I also fixed a few tiny things:

・Made a special scene if you abandon Foofter in the tree.


・Added an "exit game choice" to the main menu, and made the game begin in fullscreen mode.
・A few other tweaks for the offchance that players replay levels out of order.

Now, I feel like I've said this a million times, but the only thing left to do is add monsters sounds (The new ones I recorded for Mr. and FRYER, and extras I allotted to each of the alternate Bobos in Seedling 3). Then I'm done and can celebrate for a month (while I do lots of random polish, probably).

Then release the game in about a month! AAAAHHHHHHH! Wish me luck! Here's the game's page on Steam:

I overhauled the title screen (made the background animated and removed unnecessary options from the options menu) and finally finished inputting the basic sounds (there are more, but that's polish  Wink)

So now I think it's safe to say...

Monster Garden is officially done!!!

Now to apply some polish here and there before February 8th!

I also had some luck with emailing people - Joel Couture of Siliconera kindly did a write-up (http://www.siliconera.com/2018/01/13/monster-garden-meeting-creatures-making-friends/), and I heard back from someone at another game news site, but I don't know if they've actually played yet...

But I haven't had luck with Youtubers...yet. Cheesy  Gomez
