Just so you know, you apparently need 10 ratings on Steam in order for an overall rating to appear instead of just "this game has no reviews." So now it is "Positive," but I don't know how many you need to get to "Very Positive" or "Overwhelmingly positive" - I'm guessing a lot more! I also realized that two achievements weren't triggering, and another major achievement (getting the special ending with Foofter!) wasn't even included at all. Woops! So I fixed that plus a few things I noticed when I watching a Let's Play of the game, and made the first update. Also, I guess most people know this, but Steam traffic seems to be all about the tags. Most of my traffic comes from tag pages ("RPG," "walking simulator," etc.), according to Steam's analytics page. So make sure to tag your game with anything suitable you can think of. Then I guess the most frequently tagged tags are used as the official ones displayed on the main screen. One of mine is "Dating Sim," which isn't exactly accurate, but the others are, at least. EDIT: Woops, it's not tags but "Other Product Pages" that most traffic comes from. But tag pages are a good bit, too! Who knows what it all means!

In case anyone was wondering, I found out that you need 50 reviews to qualify for "very positive" (or "very negative for that matter). Now I'm kinda wishing I hadn't handed out so many Steam keys, because I have 27 reviews, but only 19 count because 8 were by people who received keys. Anyway, only 31 more positive reviews to go! Now I'd like to move on to a new project, but there's a game jam tomorrow so I think I'll play around with Visual Novel software and make a quiz that tells you which of the 15 Monster Garden monsters you are. And then translate the whole thing into Japanese since I'm moving to Japan. It'll be broken, wonky Japanese, but maybe it'll feel like the English version of JRPGs back in the day where it's kinda off but strangely lovable...which is the desired vibe of the whole game, actually, sooo...maybe it's just right! :D

I made a new trailer since the old one said "coming February 8th" and had footage that isn't even in the final game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pRv3EpK_XE&feature=youtu.beAlso, I think watching Let's Plays is the best form of testing since you get to hear the internal monologue of someone playing for the first time. Whenever I watch one I notice at least three things I wanna change!

I like it! Short and sweet, just like your game.
I bought it at launch but still haven't gotten around to playing it (sorry...), but I really should!

Well, I'd love to hear what you think about it when you get a chance! And thanks for checking out the trailer. EDIT: And for buying the game!

I made a browser game using dating sim software "Tyrano Builder" to give people a (free) taste of Monster Garden's style. I'm gonna share it on Twitter etc. this weekend during Bit Summit, but I could use feedback! (It's a short, simple quiz to find your "monster match"). http://wzackw.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/MonsterMatch Big question: How laggy is it? For me it's slow enough that I would wonder if it was frozen... Speaking of Bit Summit, is anyone else gonna be there?

It's been so long since I posted here. I missed TIGSource! Monster Garden was accepted to be exhibited at Busan Indie Connect, which was exciting and kinda shocking since it's the first festival that was ever interested. (It's been at "Open Screens" at A MAZE and a similar "anyone can show your game" casual affair at IndieCade, but never the MAIN EXHIBITION BIG TIME!!!) So I got the first two levels/seedlings translated into Korean, and in the process realized that the whole game is 30,000 words long... Woopsie I wrote a novel! Most of the text is in level three and the endings, since those involve the most talking AND the most variation depending on who's in your party. So just the first two seedlings was relatively small and cheap. Someday I hope to afford translating the whole game into evvvvvery language! #Dreamy (I'm still planning to do my own awkward bad Japanese translation, just so I can release it in Japanese at least.) Anywho, here's a screenshot of the Korean version: The translator was awesome and helpful, so lemme know if you need a Korean translator and I'll recommend him! And here are all the hand-crafted business cards I made for BIC: Only 60 of them! That might not be enough for four days of exhibiting, but I like making them special and unique. I'll report back afterwards!

Thanks! Some are from the game, some are characters I've been drawing lately, and some are random and unique to the cards!

Something crazy happened on Twitter yesterday when I mentioned the idea of "healing" as a genre for games and wanting more of them. https://twitter.com/williamzwood/status/1039062614687416320I'm starting to think the best description of Monster Garden is a "30-minute healing game"...but that sounds a bit serious, so I'd like to add the word light-hearted or playful in there somewhere... I don't know. But people shared so many personal stories about games they find healing -- lots of good recommendations to look into!

Monster Garden was nominated for "Excellence in Experimental" at Busan Indie Connect! The festival was a lot of fun, and they even printed a huge wall poster for the booth that I got to keep! :D Here's my booth:

I submitted my game to Bit Summit (the big indie game festival of Japan in Kyoto) last year and got rejected, but this year it was accepted! (Probably because I've been working on a Japanese translation.)
So yay! It's this weekend.
I'm translating it myself since it's 30,000 words and I can't afford to pay someone else to do it, BUT I'm also saying it's like the poorly translated English versions of JRPGs in the 90s, only poorly translated into Japanese since Japanese players missed out on that experience in the 90s.
Is that a stretch? IDK, but I honestly believe there is something great about slightly off, mysteriously unnatural language.
Here's the Japanese trailer!
