The title says it all.. I'm also curious because I make music on the side, so this is also research to me - and to many others in here I guess. Here's a couple I adore, the first one contains rap, and I'm not really a rap fan actually, so this really had to grow on me.. I stuck to it for the music and Mike Reagan's singing tho.. And now I have come to even like the rap.. And the great giana sisters set to symphonic orchestra.. Chris huelsbeck.. I also adore the monkey island themes, for the most part Let's see what'ya got.

Final Fantasy 2-14 Jeremy Soule (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Guild Wars 1/2/expansions) Castlevania (basically all) Chrono Trigger (prefer Blake Robinson's version) Kingdom Hearts 2 & Birth by sleep Bloodborne
I like game music while coding, and audiobooks for drawing.

My absolute favourite is the Boktai 1/2 soundtrack. Criminally underrated games.

Ocarina of Time Donkey Kong Country 2 Drakengard 1 Demon's Souls Shadowgate Persona 4
If we count soundtracks that use pre-existing music, add the GTA series and Little Big Planet. I don't actually play GTA anymore but whoever curates those radio stations at rockstar has great taste.

VVVVVV has the best soundtrack imo. I even joke sometimes that the soundtrack is the real product and the game itself is just a bonus, haha.

It's so hard to pick out the best one, so I'll just throw in entire soundtrack from previously played game.

It's also a fun feature that the music follows the game.

Yep.
Fun fact: this game's plot can give you an aneurysm.
Edit: No wait...I recant that as best ost.
I lost it when this happened mid-game in Goemon 64

If I was only allowed to pick one then it's gotta be:
Risk Of Rain (first time I bought an OST before the game).

The anime rave in space of Thunder Force IV. Some of those tracks really pump the bass, it's a revelation if the only Mega Drive soundtracks you've experienced are from western games using the sound driver that made everything sound like a broken clock radio going through a trash compactor (ie, the shit one).
Rise Of the Triad is the other favourite and easily the best soundtrack from a first person shooter. It's the horn section. (old) Doom is classic, Duke Nukem 3D's sounded like an exploitation film which rules and there were some really memorable tunes from Unreal Tournament but all of them pale in comparison to ROTT's because they don't have horns. Who would want to kill people with overpowered missile launchers to some dipshit's bedroom metal project when you can do it to something as upbeat and classy like this:

I have so many I like that I wouldn't even know where to start, but two that stand out to me are Etrian Odyssey 4's and Maple Story.
