It has been announced that there won't be Ludum Dare this August. Creator post: http://ludumdare.com/compo/2016/06/08/well-this-is-awkward-2/

What do you think about it ? It is true that every time the LD has become increasingly more monstrous and that the voting system was clearly not worked well.

Just read this as well. Makes sense that PoV would want to take a break from running LD to fix everything up for the one after that. It can only result in a better long term Ludum Dare experience imo. In the meantime, someone could take the reins on TIG and run a sort of homemade august LD, a sort of local LD 35.5.

Is anyone interested in that I wonder?

The guy deserves a break. He sounds super tired, I can understand. And yeah, the community can hold their own gamejam in August.

From a project management point of view giving the guy a break in August and allow him to finish the new website seems like the best way for Ludum Dare to survive in the long run. He seems like the kind of guy that even if some group tries to run it for him he will still try and help them as much as he can and it is likely he will lose as much time teaching and supporting those people as he would just doing it himself.

Pretty much anywhere online that votes can be automated, they'll be exploited. It's unfortunate.

I'm co-running a jam in July with under a couple dozen people. Personally I find the comparison of what you made between other people you know much more interesting than the dozens, hundreds of people online.

Ironically as game development becomes easier and easier to get into.. well, anyone can get into it and lower quality games + lower quality people (vote manipulation) comes into effect.

I think LD would work great strictly for small communities -- groups of friends, specific cities etc. Kind of how Global Game Jam works.

While I'm on my rant.. I found the theme voting uninspired. I wish there were photos or songs as references, something like the fake album challenge http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2009/03/24/name-your-band-create-your-album-cover-with-wikipedia-flickr/.

There was a recent low-res jam and I liked that -- constraints breed creativity.
