Seems cool so far, yeah. If you move quicker when in battle state (which seems cool / fine), though, why would you ever want to not be in that state?

@SolarLune : when you are in fight mode, NPCS attack you. and if you kill NPCS you low your reputation.

That seems like it could just be the type of system where they only attack you if you hit them first (perhaps even multiple times). So, I guess my question is, "Why does being in fight mode make NPCs aggressive?".

I can answer that question as well I guess.
Right now, what happens is that normal villagers, who don't fight, will be surprised and run away after a few moments, and other fighters will draw their sword, just like you did, and wait a bit until attacking you. So no, it isn't immediately, but going into battlestance will definitely make others a lot more aggressive.

the combat system is growing well i think. of course we need to fix a lot of things, but i'm happy with the direction !
