I only got around to playing Cave Story a few months ago. I loved it.

Is there another indie platformer you would rate as good as this one?

1001 Spikes and Shovel Knight are great, if they are still indie.

Super Meat Boy
Braid
Broforce
Downwell
Fez
Freedom Planet
Guacamelee
Mark of the Ninja
Shovel Knight
Thomas Was Alone

Are you looking for something more actiony like Cave Story? If that's the case, I'd really recommend giving La-Mulana a shot. Pixel (the dev behind Cave Story) also released a mobile/PC game called Kero Blaster recently that plays very similarly to Cave Story. I had a lot of fun with it, so I'd definitely recommend that one.

The indie platformer genre is huge in range, though. Is there any particular aspect of Cave Story that you're looking for in these other games?

Edit: Every game mentioned above is great, too. I'd add:
- Knytt Stories
- An Untitled Story
- Iji
- Glum Buster
- LIMBO
- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
- Super Metroid/Metroid Fusion
- Momodora II
- Legend of Princess
- Eversion

Shorter & simpler, but the Gunman Clive games were really fun.

There are alot of good side scrollers around, more specifically Pixel did make another side scroller before Cave Story called Ikachan.

I'd really recommend giving La-Mulana a shot.
He said "as good as" not better.

But seriously, you really should play La-Mulana. Start with the MSX hommage version then move on to the remake when you're done with it. Even though the remake is the better of the two the original is still worth playing even if it's just for the music.

nah, start with the remake. the original is great, but it requires either a guide or a very high tolerance for obscure puzzles.

fez.

the fall is great too, but it's as much a platformer as, uh, another world. which, also that counts too.

oh! pause ahead is important here. it's the tower of heaven guys (also worth checking that one out) making something very much inspired by cave story with a mechanic unlike anything else in games. please look it up.

fjords is great.

i want to play fez again now.

oh! nifflas' stuff, especially within a deep forest and knytt stories.

That's a real game title, in case you thought they were posting an emote. It's a fun one.

What's the game, Nifflas I think, where you move a little ball around and can charge it up, boost and dive -- sidescrolling platformer?

FK's post here covered most of the major ones. i'd like to reiterate that An Untitled Story is a fantastic choice and is weirdly forgotten a lot

fjords is great too

Maybe you're thinking about NightSky.

A good indie platformer that no one remembers or seems to care about is Lyle in Cube Sector. It's biggest flaw lies in that it's super hard at first but gets easier as you gain power-ups, but it's a great "Metroidvania" that is sadly forgotten... well, not really, you can see speedruns and such in Youtube.

Yep, the graphics on Steam look more saturated than I remember. Great game!

Fuck yes Lyle in cube sector owns so hard

Also anything by Bernie is great: http://www.origamihero.com/ori6/games.php
He's been quietly releasing games the past couple of years that I haven't been able to play because I don't have a Windows machine anymore but they look delightful (as always)
