Waiting on a response from Indie Game Design program at college, so meanwhile I'm not just going to sit on my ass in case I don't get accepted this year. I wanted to know if there are any games out there much like Mario that one might suggest I play/research for the upcoming game I have in mind. For now the mechanics in mind are jumping, spring jump, dash and quick strafe.

Thank you for your time in reading this message!

Do you have any games already on your list for playing?

When I think "puzzle platformer" I mostly think of single-screen levels. Is that the sort of thing you're aiming for or are you aiming for mario-style scrolling levels?

Something like Mario 64 in the levels. I've got no games so far of this genre, but for my first game I wanted to try something simpler for kids. It will have collectibles like Banjo Kazooie, but I wanted something that required more thought than that game or Donkey Kong 64.

I can offer two games that I love as examples of the platformer genre:

1. Super Meat Boy: This game really focuses on tight mechanics and challenging levels
2. Braid: This plays with the traditional view of a platformer by adding a very interesting mechanic where time is manipulated by the player

There are obviously thousands more, but these are two of my personal favorites.

For 2D I'd suggest Spelunky, Dustforce, Fez, La-Mulana, Teslagrad (u got tons).
3D can't think of anything else than the Mario games and Psychonauts atm Tongue
