I only hear people call them free games now. But I'm sure every one called them freeware a few years a go.

Conspiracy? Who, Me?

I've always considered freeware games to be
a) downloadable, and
b) free indefinitely.
If I game is only temporary free, or if it's browser based, I'd filed it under just “free”.

"Freeware" has evolved into "free-to-play" or the much more accurate term: "Free-to-start"

I think people have moved away from 'freeware' because it's often a lie, nowadays.

Especially when it comes to audio/video/document conversion software and other specific-task applications, there are a huge amount of smalltime devs who advertise their software as "freeware" but it's only "free" as long as you only want the first 15 seconds of your video converted, with a watermark and noise mixed in.

The word 'freeware' is synonymous with deceptive trial software, packaged adware, and glitchy products for me, and I don't think I'm too alone in that.

the distinction became much less important because eerybody independently sorted themselves into two mindsets: 1: you can steal anything on the internet and b) I give my life in service of Steam Sale

Freeware/shareware games remind me of Reflexive Arcade times. With games like Crimsonland, Alien Shooter, Ricoshet, etc. I guess now it's either free, or free-to-play (or pay-to-win, whatever you want)

Probably another thing contributing to this is that these days if you make some piece of software completely free it's likely you'll also release the source code (because why not?), and you'll be calling it "open source" instead.

i don't release source codes because i don't think they'll be useful for people. i'm a terrible programmer so people are better off writing their own code rather than rewriting mine.

Have you tried being a better programmer?
