This is like if Pac-Land and Earthbound had a child. Watched your early gameplay videos; the music is PERFECT!!!

Who is doing the score? It's wonderfully humorous yet stylized to reflect the visuals.

There is great promise here for something very quirky.

Really? Thank you so much.

I'm presuming score means music.. so yeah it's done by me, everything is done by me except for the engine and font

Here's another update:

Yes, I mean the music! It works wonderfully. Definitely an Earthbound vibe in the instrumentation, as well.

I look forward to hearing and seeing more of this! Just followed you on Twitter, by the way, so you may see me pop in and around there from time to time Smiley

I think late next year... Since I just started it's gonna be a while. I'm flattered that you wanna play it, if you wanna try it sooner I'm gonna release a playtesting alpha demo so stay tuned for that :D

Here's an update(gif and video):

New room(alternative opening sequence):

I like this a lot better than the other intro.

Download is out now!

Link: https://jamesmaslaki.itch.io/mad-world-test-build

Currently only for Windows, I will eventually get to a Mac and Linux port, I'll get to it faster if there's demand for it.

Back with some updates:

1.
Simple, nothing special, but finally got to a currency system and items. You can equip weapons or use consumables now.

2.
Updates the walking animation for the main character. Looks a bit funny, but I like it. I think it fits his current state of being.

3. Updated areas

4. How to get Caveboy's hat

You kill him and he drops Wormy

5. New scene(video)
After you get knocked out a second time by Spring Man

Damn, that spring man jumpscare is going to give me nightmares.

I have to say, when I just looked at some of the art it felt like it's going to be a weird little game - but it turned out to be a lot weirder than I expected. Now I can't stop watching the videos.

Your songwriting skills are on point.

Haha thanks! And yeah everyone's been complaining about the jump scare, I do admit it's cheap. But I like it. At the same time I don't wanna expose the game's weird nature at that point. So I'm gonna take it away and just have the player be knocked out from something.

Anyways, back with some updates:

1. Spring Man boss battle! Plus new battle stats, battle sounds, and a game over screen.

Yes, there are a few new battle stats for the enemy which include, crit, crit chance, and defense.

2. New character and slightly improved walking animation

Yup, still haven't named him yet. You find him in a secret door after you kill Spring Man.

The only major problem I'm having is with the MediaPlayer class in Monogame(XNA 4). Sometimes it won't play, for no good reason. And I've heard if you don't have Windows Media Player installed it will crash the game, so I need to find an alternative for playing music.

Party members!

I will have NPCs that can join your "party", follow you around, and aid you in battle!

Right now I'm trying to make him follow you in all directions, which I'm struggling with, but I usually find a way.

To conclude, so far it's been 4 months, and I've only gotten 15 minutes of gameplay, and this is all I do.

'Till next time.

I've been working a lot on party members, programming them to follow you around and especially this little guy

But I might remove him entirely from the game, just because there's something about him that makes the game less cool to me. I feel like it's better if the player is solo... so I'm not sure about party members. Maybe I'll have certain characters join your party temporarily Smiley

So what's next in the world of MAD WORLD? Well, after killing Spring Man, you make your way out of the creepy old shed, and out of the mountains, off to the road of safety. But suddenly, the little ol' caterpillar comes back.

I'm actually falling in love with this game. The humor is just so weird and out there that I don't know what to expect, and that's exciting. It's one of the reasons I'm so fond of Undertale. The music in this hold charm too. I can see this becoming a hit!

Also, I'm curious as to why the videos and songs are being removed?

Really? I'm glad!! And thank you. The reason I take down videos and songs is because I usually have them updated and I don't want people to see the outdated version. Also I tried your game Hidden Village a while ago and it's really cool  : ) also I noticed you like Animal Crossing too, which is one of my favorite games ever.

Here's a video on the leveling system, xp, etc.:

Introducing a new(minor) enemy:

Unyun the Onion! His attack is that he reeks.
ATK: 2
GIVES: 20 XP
SMELLS: Bad.
UN: yun

Oh gosh haha, the game is made very sloppily, so I'm happy you thought anything of it. And I do like (LOVE) Animal Crossing, it's my favorite gaming franchise, followed by Mother and Paper Mario.

The effects you manage are very impressive. I'm interested in them myself since I'm also creating a Earthbound-esque game. Are you by any chance using shaders for them?

That music track is awesome by the way! I'd been wanting to hear the full thing!
