There's been a lot of speculation surrounding exactly what the Nintendo NX is going to be.
A recent article on EuroGamer gave some interesting insights.

---

I'm thinking it could be similar to a modern N64 Transfer Pak, but instead of just the cartridge you plug in the whole 'GameBoy.'
For those not familiar, the Transfer Pak allowed you to play GameBoy games on your TV.

Viewing this concept through a modern lens, things get interesting.
Taking a look at Nintendo's patents that were filed a while ago, it seems this process could be wireless.

My guess is that the 'Supplemental Computing Device' holds an external CPU/GPU.
This could be used to upscale the handheld NX games to high resolutions and frame rates.

However the 'Game Console' is a portable handheld that can be taken anywhere.
I'm thinking the NX is two separate but combined platforms, which represent handheld and console.

The 'handheld' portion of the NX could be replacement for the 3DS.
The 'console' portion of the NX could be a replacement for the Wii U.

Nintendo could even modularize purchases: perhaps you could buy the handheld version separately for a cheap price.
However, if you want a high performance console-like experience, you buy the console extension with the handheld.

For example, maybe Zelda Breath of the Wild runs in 720p@30FPS on handheld, but 1080p@60FPS with the console extension.

All of this makes sense considering the Wii U, but imagine if the Wii U controller was also a portable handheld.

---

What are your thoughts on the NX?

If it can upscale 3DS games and also allow me to play Wii U games on the go, I'm sold.

Where is Gimmy
on a tom hanks style wooden raft battling the tides and ranting incomprehensibly about 3d graphics in between unexpected mouthfuls of sea water

Where is my coconut friend? I have a fede.... A speculation to deliver.

I think the supplemental power thingy is just really game video streaming as the tegra support it natively.

But I made huge speculation in the pollution thread already. And I like my speculation speculative rather than guessing.

It's just a dock (also portable) for mobile phone that augment them with gaming interface and power, it's super cheap precisely because no screen.

New patent with kinect like detector that replace the electronique for buttons and hint at a projector ... wouldmake a universal attachmenent with just a bunch of plastics, bringing cost down!

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1261569

Also looks more and more closer to that mock up

That patent's a neat solution to custom controllers, and would make it really easy and cheap to include them with games.  (It sounds like a Nintendo thing to do, too, like to have NX Sports as an early title and have a bunch of controller add-ons that have you do an action physically more similar to what you do in the sport.)

A projector-based console/handheld hybrid would be interesting.  I just bought an Icodis CB-300 (a pretty decent pico projector with its own processor, GPU, OS, battery, and touchscreen), and it's about handheld-sized; you could have a system like it that was basically a handheld, but where the controller part detaches, legs come out, and it becomes a projector-based console.  (But I don't think the prices are quite there yet -- right now it'd probably be too expensive for a handheld, but uncompetitive in terms of resolution and clarity with similarly-priced home console systems.)
