The patent allows for cheap components without electronics to be used as controllers like the circle pad pro without a battery so they can make a ton of these if they want. Which would be cool allowing for new control schemes for games or other functions (more comfortable controllers, battery life extenders, etc) It could also match the new 3DS's personalization with new skins being sellable. The patent isn't limited by devices that lack electronics as that would go against this rumor, but it could be cool to see them experiment. I imagine these will be compatible with every NX as well (or at least I'd hope so) Would be interesting if they'd be attachable to the top and bottoms of the screen to allow for portrait mode games as well http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=213549012&postcount=13460

i like the idea of a big company breaking out of the hardware arms race that results in internecine nerd conflict about the minutiae of functionally identical computers + spiralling multi million dollar budgets. i dislike the idea of that company being nintendo because their entire unchanging business model is predicated on 1. high margins on hardware 2) proprietary formats which are worse than other standards solely so they can make money on every game published even if it destroys their third party support and c - ever changing controller standards resulting in enormous amounts of peripherals that confuse consumers

The NX will be the arms, confirming what we've seen. Don't you see? They've been planning it all along!

I like the concept of module system, but there are too many things to worry about in that case. Losing modules, battery life (if module is something more than just piece of plastic), price of games that come with modules. But the most important for me - how durable it will be if you keep changing modules at least several times a day. I don't think that they will use straight contacts, though. Maybe irda, like in 3DS circle pad.

For the last point, the whole point is that it is optic, so no contact, maybe attachment is what might suffer, on neogaf some who works on manufacturing and analyze those patent proposed magnet for contact, they have this snappy feel, are precise and get the job done (cheap plastic clips is more likely to degrade other time)

magnets wear out over time as well tho. would suck pretty hard if you couldn't use your controller in 5 years because it just falls apart.

If it's only plastic then home 3D print at the rescue Also I have the same problem with actual controller anyway

how can it only be plastic? whats the logic behind that, saspecially with differing input methods. You still need sensors and a way to transmit information (doubtfult it will only use mechanical components.)

The connector interface on the device itself is basically just an infrared camera, and the connector interface on the attached controller is just a window. The controller is designed so that each controller state has a visually distinct profile from the POV of the camera. (By position, by having their internal expression be coated in reflective material that reflects certain wavelengths, things like that.)
