Hello everyone!

So I've recently ventured into the world of video games for composition and I am planning on moving to a new city in about a year. I've done film work in the past and have a couple projects in the works that are video game related. I got into composition in the first place because I wanted to write for games (childhood dream). My income in my current city just isn't cutting it and I need to make face to face connections with developers.

What do you composers and developers out there think?

Cheers!  Beer!

Enrique

Hi Enrique. I moved here to Seattle almost 4ish years ago and found a wonderful community of other composers and sound designers in the area. Work is a bit more sparse than I would like, but there are good opportunities a'plenty.

Most of the jobs I want are in some way affiliated with LA, so that may be your best bet. But be prepared for the fierce competition.  Best of luck  Smiley

Right that's what I don't like about LA. I don't even really like the city but that's life... Yeah I'm looking to make a comfortable living no necessarily after fame and glory. Simple pleasures you know?

Can confirm - Seattle has a lot of musicians - so, nice community, but also some stiff competition for gaming gigs. Networking is key. I met both of the musicians I've worked with at the local Seattle Indies events.

Also, if you're not shy about performing on stage or doing commercial work, it is still a pretty good market for music making.

You might also be able to get some mileage(no pun intended) making day trips to Portland and Vancouver every now and then to also mix with those communities, which are every bit as strong as Seattle's.

I have been looking at Portland as well. Being the hipster that I am, it's the most attractive option so far but thought I'd scope out other places too.

I'm curious about conventions and indie game meetups. I know about the big famous ones but are there smaller ones that maybe happen more frequently?

Gonna hijack your post, I live near LA, and ironically have not found a source for game dev meetups.  I am also a composer, looking to break into this biz....

I'd say

Seattle
Vancouver
California (multiple cities)
and up-and-coming Austin TX

Are good bets. As always, bigger better community and companies = more competition. Personally I'd go Seattle or Vancouver if I had my choice.

I'm in west Texas so this option would be ideal!

Btw, I read through your getting started article on your website a couple weeks ago. Very helpful information! Some good points I hadn't thought about.
Thanks for that!  Beer!
