Apparently it is rumoured that Playstation 4 will abandon dualshock (though it will still be compatible) and instead will have controller with touch screen:

'new controller to break the mould'
... Like the Playstation Move did? Undecided

It was a subtle move designed to encourage couch potato children to spend less time with games and more time discovering the whole world around them available all day every day for free. "The only glitchless physics engine" was going to be the marketing tagline.

Management immediately nixed it when they saw what it did to profit projections.

Hey guys, how hard is it to use unity to make, say, a 3d game like Dear Esther? On a rate of 1 to ten, where 1 is scratch, 4 is game maker, and 10 is coding it all in C++.

Also, any really bored artists willing to make me an Impmaster profile picture that I can use around the web?

7.5

I had a brief play with Unity and you really need to dedicate a whole chunk of time to do anything other than basic stock stuff. Firstly just learning the environment takes ages. You'll probably find a basic FPS example so just walking around will be simple but if you want to do anything else you'll need to get to know C# and then there's the whole issue of making models and textures.

When I tried it I wanted to make a basic flying game. I couldn't find any code examples for flying so I asked on the forum and they pretty much just went "Go buy the $40 example kit". I wouldn't even bother with Unity unless you have the time and the aptitude for 'proper' code.

After about a week after I started learning Unity I ended up with this:

All of it are custom assets except for the tree model. That scene is kind of amateurish but Unity is a powerful and simple tool. Learning coding is another thing though. Dear Esther isn't a game that uses a lot of coding, it's more advanced on the graphical and aesthetic end.

If I have a relatively good knowledge of Java, (building a school project in it), what would be the best engine or system to make a 3d game in?
So far, I know of Unity, Unreal Engine, and modding an FPS. (Is it an FPS or a FPS?)

What the fuck is happening in this emoticon?

 Waaagh!

HIS LEFT EYE MORPHS INTO A MOUTH. That is incredibly disturbing, far more than I would expect a 16x16 gif to be. Why is that even there? Who would create such a thing?

Just came across this tidbit:

http://hackaday.com/2013/01/19/write-code-fix-the-space-station-win-10000/

Kinda like a game-jam, but got some more interesting elements involved.

I can't wait to get started on my submission, this looks like a fun problem to solve.

Tell me if this idea sounds interesting.

A multiplayer detective game set in a big mansion with the camera and controls of games like Clock Tower and Lone Survivor. A couple of people spawn as murderers who has to stealthily kill of the rest of the players while detectives go around searching for clues and inspect dead bodies. There would be chats in each of the rooms and communication limited to only text that pops up adventure game style. I would try to replicate the same stressful situations like in Clock Tower.

Dude, I had a very similar idea not too long ago (obviously with some key differences, but same gist). Therefore, I think it sounds amazing  Smiley
