"Embrace, extend, and extinguish",[1] also known as "Embrace, extend, and exterminate",[2] is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found[3] that was used internally by Microsoft[4] to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors.

seems like that was with varying success tho. for instance, activex was used mostly to distribute viruses (iirc) and most windows users who know what they are doing don't touch internet explorer to this day. it killed netscape but it didn't kill mozilla (founded by netscape).

Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen.
A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX - within the controller - to display on your TV. [...]

Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers

More about the inner life of the NX:

Nintendo NX is powered by Nvidia Tegra technology
Huh, that sound like old neogaf speculations

If true, it might have discount from the commercial flop nvidia shield tablet, which might mean streaming game tech ... play your PC game on the NX :O (works with their patents of increasing the power of the console through external device).

the answer to this is to either promote DRM free digital services like GOG that let you freely archive your stuff or, u know, pirate. this dude is complaining about digital games, but think how many old arcade games would be unplayable today (except by the rich) if mame wasn't a thing and people didn't archive roms. and despite those efforts, there are STILL some lost arcade games. there are also tons of lost films, including by important directors, from the pre-home video days. this is nothing new.

The split controller set up of the rumored Nx Hybrid remind me of a VR set up, what if they release a gear like "cardboard" case and then use the separated pad as motion control? The dock making the 3D tracking. More to future proof the console rather than a strategy.

Also the dock has a extra gpu chip to augment graphic for TV, SLI style, which allow you to get a dock depending on your setup (hd, 4k, etc ...).

people find ways to make private servers for the really popular ones at least.

More speculation:

The console will be call some variation of SLATE.

It will be street pass on crack, about bringing people together in real life and augmented the real world, inspired by the 3ds louvre experiment they did.

The wii U already had a google map

The wireless console boosting with the dock can use off site dock, more powerful, which can provide on site data to dedicated site (like the louvre).

The idea is that you go through the world and scan it a bit like link in BOTW, maybe with stable AR capacity (unlike mobile the hardware is controlled).

Zelda slate, a zelda go game where you go through teh world and collect resources ala link in BTW and claim spot by killing moblin camp using the motion control "arrow" vision of your slate.

Dock inside house can be use to augment power of other player that pass by using a special license. This will encourage people to build server that would be the hardware equivalent of lure in pokemon go.
