Okay real talk about the new Far Cry 5 trailer
Is it just me or does it feel like they're trying to appeal to Middle America, not denigrate it?
Just listing off some of the themes and things treated positively from the trailer:
-family legacy, wanting to leave something for your children
-respect for military veterans and their sacrifices
-big guns, protecting your family
-faith and freedom
-cults are the issue, not religion
-pastors with guns à la Book of Eli
-growing up in small towns
-family businesses
-more big guns
-more defending your property and family
Feels a lot like Middle America values to me.
It helps that its the heroes aren't an outside force coming to save some small town from their own culture, but about a small town protecting themselves from an invading outside force - a radical cult.
That whole trailer looks awesome, and as someone who feels more associated with "Red" America than not it actually resonates with me. Doesn't feel judgey or even politically topical honestly.
American cults are a dang cool topic, and there's a lot of history there (Branch Davidians and the Waco Siege, FLDS groups, The People's Temple and Jonestown) that's ripe for the picking to make cool games so long as its treated properly. And from that trailer I don't see any issues there.

I'd much rather have a game where I play a foreign soldier shooting up American cultists though and have the game justify it by how they're fanatics ie not real people ie ok to massacre.
I didn't watch the trailer but I'm betting the game is gonna have a confused message about how both sides are actually wrong because both/neither [unintelligible] *smug look*

My point was that everyone saying "The fuk is this shit" and "Hoo boy I get to shoot Trump supporters" are both way off point, and that nobody seems to have watched the trailer. The only people actually taking this seriously seems to be Ubisoft Montreal.
Modern games especially war games have had a ton of shitty stereotypes. Rami Ismail has said a ton of great stuff on that topic, and I hope devs take that to heart. But yeah I'm not sure how begging for reciprocal shitty stereotypes is progress but whatever man.

This 100%. Probably someone was like "wouldnt it be cool to make it about those Bundy guys who are on the news today, in 2014, and other doomsday preppers and jade helm militia nuts?" Then, during pitch and at various points of development, some exec was like "we cant offend out target demographic of manchild asscreed assholes, we should play it safe" so now its a non-christian cult that has no racial discrimination it seems? also that image is a gif that keeps on giving. Cant find hires versions on intrnet today, but that background collage cows and bear are some sick skills |
