back when youtube had a 30 fps restriction it always annoyed me how people who upload video game footage are almost all either too dumb or too lazy to blend the frames
blending frames looks bad in a lot of cases if you ask me. makes the image look way less sharp, though youtube's compression isn't that good. it's especially noticeable on 24fps film.

skipping frames is like downsizing an image with nearest neighbor

that's an objectively bad analogy since it's comparing downsampling with upsampling. if you're actually adding frames to the original data then there are different methods appropriate for different uses ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation). with downsampling it's never really desirable to throw away information if it can instead be incorporated and implied at the target resolution.

i was trying to show that yours was a bad analogy as well, because resolution and framerate aren't all that similar. note that blending frames can mean a downgrade in resolution, because you're muddying individual frames with that additional data.

Framerate is a resolution though, and they're pretty similar when you start thinking about it. It's all just data after all, to which you can really apply all the same algorithms, which affects the outcome and our perception in analogous ways. You can for example easily make the argument that NN temporal down-sampling is bad for old video games in particular for the same reason spatial NN downsampling is bad for pixel art: both tend to heavily use dithering (on the temporal axis this would be flickering effects, blinking on hit, etc), and throwing away information at a set interval will display the dithering's implied middle ground as only one of the states: a black/white checkerboard pixel pattern at halved resolution will appear either completely black or white, not gray as would be appropriate, and an every other frame blinking effect implying transparency will be completely lost as the object is either solid or invisible.
unless you employ some hack, like one I've seen someone use where you keep two consecutive frames and throw away the next two, and so on, instead of every other evenly, which is pretty clever but you can probably imagine how this entails its own problems

You linked a video explaining an interpolation method for adding frames. Schoq and I were discussing removing frames.

It's real. 44 people died and many got hurt and lost their houses. Last monday the class I was attending was interrupted midway because the smog was so intense the school stopped all activities for the day due to health concerns. A XIII century pinewood in the district got 80% destroyed.
