Greetings Everyone: I've been contemplating what would be both a profitable and interesting music challenge for the folks here. The 'cover eachother' challenge was interesting for a number of reasons so I decided to challenge composers in a similar way:
This time around, I want to explore the 'classical' notion of a theme and variations. Many media composers struggle to transform musical material since these are skills that are more applicable for concert music composers. The idea here is to tackle this skill head on and hopefully learn something valuable. I will be providing a simple melody and chord changes, and the task will be for the entrants to state the theme and then come up with 3 subsequent variations.
So, the form will be as follows: 1) Theme. State the melody in its entirety but feel free to use whatever chords / style you want. 2) Variation one. 3) Variation two. 4) Variation Three.
Each time there is a variation, manipulate the musical material in an interesting way. The idea is to paraphrase the melody and come up with some interesting harmonies and textures. The entries will be a bit longer but this shouldn't be a problem.
Entrants can PM me their email and I will provide audio & sheet music for the theme. I can also provide a midi version for those who are interested.
How about we take 2 weeks for sign ups and then a month for the challenge!
Looking forward to hearing from all of you!!

[edit] Ladies and gents, I'm loving the response so far but can you possibly post in the thread here too just so we have an idea of the headcount? Thanks!

Also, waiting on a recording for the theme. I was thinking of waiting to present it until the start of the contest. What do you all think? I do have a score for it and I can provide midi and terrible garritan playback if people would like.
The theme -in typical classical fashion- is a beginner / simple string piece I wrote for a student and it is in the style of Joe Hisaishi. The melody and harmonies are pretty straight forward which means it is perfect for manipulation!

Alright, I'm finished--just in time. It's uploaded right here (or check out https://soundcloud.com/sander-van-zanten-1/meandering)! The melody used in the submission is based on the original White Princess melody, if somewhat freely. The form requirement made for a great exercise, and although I have much to learn still about themes and variations, I'm pleased with how this exercise worked out. I'm looking forward to the other submissions! Time's running out folks!

Here it is. I did this one backwards (started with the final variation and ended on the original melody), so it's more of an 'emergent' melody. Also, think Sci-Fi, not fantasy.
