Catloaf 2600

This is an update of a game I made back in 2007. It had some problems with newer systems that hadn't been addressed until now. Also, I didn't do much to market and share the game back then. So I'm trying to give it more of an official release this year.

Here's a great description from the MobyGames page (thank you to whoever wrote this, it's great):

Quote
You control the movements of the feline bread product "Catloaf" as you navigate through various static hazards in the insidious labyrinth of the sinister Master Meatloaf, in which you've been imprisoned as the result of some unspecified internecine loafist dispute. Avoid traps (which will take one of five lives), collect the appropriate keys to unlock corresponding doors, and upon completing the game... play through again with bonus content unlocked!

The game embodies a certain retro, primitive visual and play aesthetic, hence the "2600" in its name.

I love text graphics games like this!  Er, maybe 2600 is a little too advanced.  The Atari 2600 had no text mode - only 2 sprites, 2 missiles and a ball.  This is more IBM PC in 40 column mode.

That being said, I could probably port this over to the sega genesis Smiley

Thanks for the feedback.

You are correct. Graphically, it's nothing like an Atari 2600. I can't remember what I was thinking when I named it, whether I realized that or not, or if I didn't care enough to change it. Anyway, glad you like it. Smiley

If you'd like to port it, go for it! The original source is on my GitHub page: https://github.com/grasshoppersunshine/catloaf2600 (simple one-page source file that would be easy to read and port).
The SDL update is here: https://github.com/grasshoppersunshine/catloaf2600sdl.

This was entertaining. Like a VIC-20 Zelda. Thanks!

FYI after playing this game with my kids like a year ago somehow they incorporated the catloaf and meatloaf characters into their vernacular and have also invented others like breadloaf, birdload and pumpkinloaf.  Any plans on making a Catloaf II or even better Catloaf Construction Kit for making our own catloaf games? Thanks  Grin

That's amazing! Reading that makes my day. Thank you for sharing. Smiley

I do have a sequel in the works: https://www.indiedb.com/games/catloaf-adventure.

Currently, it's ~85% complete, on the back-burner. I'm presently putting my efforts into releasing Toad On Fire this summer, then I will come back to Catloaf Adventure and wrap it up, hopefully before the year is out.

The construction kit -- not a bad idea. I'm going to think on that.

Hmm, I think I've pushed every block that isn't nailed down but I can't find any more keys or anywhere new to go.

Oh nice! I just saw that you made a sequel! My kids will be excited. It looks like it's still a work in progress but we'll check it out. Thanks!
