Hey!

I wrote an article describing some inexpensive high quality approaches to video game music. Check it out and let me know what you think! Thanks  Gentleman

Thanks for the article.

I really like that you mention silence right away. Right up there with stingers, I feel silence is an auditory key which catches my attention the most (or at least gets me thinking). Our game might even need a bit of it... I'll be passing it onto our composer.

Interesting advices, thanks for sharing! (Although I'll have forgotten most of that the day I need it...)

Nice article, thanks for sharing. Just a conceptual question: I thought that a "stinger" was actually some sort of short fragment of music that intensifies the background music (if any), mixing nicely with it at the correct timing. Am I correct? (I'm not a musician, but I read about this "stinger" concept on the Wwise library documentation).

Hey, I'm glad you liked the article.

The stinger definition that you described is only half correct. You are correct in saying that a stinger is a short fragment of music. The purpose of a stinger, though, is to communicate the occurrence of a gameplay event to the player (like a victory outcome, a defeat outcome, a transition, a hint, etc...). The stinger may or may not blend with the actual background music, in fact, it is quite common for the background music to stop playing entirely when the stinger is triggered.

Great! Thanks for the clarification. It's always good to know this terminology (even if you're not musician) in order to communicate effectively with the musician in your team.

Fractures Music posted on a Tigsource thread for my game Quantum Pilot, asking me to hire them since they've developed music for similar genre (SHMUP bullet hell arcade). They did a fantastic job IMO and players like the music. http://fracturesmusic.com/

Great article and I like the tip about using silence effectively & reusing tracks in different scenarios! I hadn't consciously thought about Stingers before, so thank you =)
