Hello.

I'm working on a game, it will be an Action RPG.
You play a golem and you'll be able to swap between rock, fire, water, etc... So, I have many sprites to do, that's why I will draw the caracter symmetrical.
But how do you feel about a character who will also swap between being left-handed and right-handed ?
And how do you feel if the lighting is a bit off ?

Here is a mockup of the game :

The lighting on the character is not so strong, so would you feel ok with a swap ?
And what if he attacks with his right hand, and the other time, the left hand ?

Thanks for your feedbacks !

I think mirroring sprites is such a tradition in gaming that most of ours brain is already wired to not mind, even if you had asymmetrical details going on. Most of us don't even think about what hand does the character really uses.

So in short, just mirror the sprites! IMHO, and use the time to make more enemies and polish what you already have!

PS: nice rocks, by the way!

Perfect. I wasn't sure that it would be the answer I would get, but it's definitly the one I wanted ! ^^

Thanks a lot. Smiley

this topic made me go check if the character Melting (nuclear throne) was mirrored or not.
and he was mirrored. i guess that most people won't really matter.

the effort result ratio isn't worth unless you want extra polishness which will only matter for a few people.

yeah in most cases it's a relatively huge amount of work basically for players to go "huh. that's a nice touch."

Yeah, it would probably be just more for myself.

Thanks for your feedbacks, it reassured me. Smiley

An easy third option is just to mirror the characters themselves but have two sprites for the weapon (per facing) so that the weapon accounts for the body flip.

It's a bad half-assed example but hopefully you get the general idea:

That's clever. I like it.
