I'm a classically-trained musician that used to use Cakewalk for my music. I'm well-aware that Cakewalk is outdated, even more so since my last release. What should I be looking at for my next software?
My current project requires a flute solo and a 5-7 piece woodwind set with backing snare and guitar.

Although free would be great, I wouldn't mind paying a couple hundred bucks for the right software.

I'm assuming you're performing all the instruments yourself via midi?

Never have I used it but a lot of my friends and fellow composer/sound designers like Reaper a lot, it's fairly cheap and can do a lot. I'm a Logic Pro snob, have been for a long time. The instruments that come with it aren't bad at all, but you may want to consider investing in good Kontakt instrument libraries, which you can use in Reaper, Logic, pretty much any DAW.
