UPDATE[2017.08.06]: The final update has been released, version 1.2 with the below changes:

v1.2:
- fixed an instance of elevator being in wrong position when respawning.
- energy recharges slightly faster when on ground.
- added 5 new rooms to reduce backtracking.
- added checkpoint at mines key.
- added button prompt on intro screens.
- delay skipping ending screens.
- other minor tweaks.

Available at the same links below.

========================

UPDATE[2017.01.06]: After lots of good feedback I've uploaded version 1.1 of Prime Mover, with the below changes:

v1.1 changes:
- added keys Z and B as alternative to Spacebar.
- added checkpoints at unlocked doors and key points, continue can be used 3 times.
- small changes to some enemies.

It's available at the same sites.

========================

UPDATE: I've uploaded version 1.0.

Changes from the last demo, I've added the ending screens, added music, a cheesy loading screen, and some tweaks to game play.

You can play the released version from any of the below:

http://gamejolt.com/games/prime-mover/222577

https://helpcomputer.itch.io/prime-mover

http://www.kongregate.com/games/helpcomputer0/prime-mover

Hope you enjoy it! Cheers.

========================

I've uploaded a fully-playable HTML5 version of a small platform game I've been messing around with. It's playable from start to finish but is missing ending screens and music.

It's a fun little platformer that isn't impossibly difficult, and probably lasts around 15-30mins. Any feedback is appreciated.

Nice game!

Simple controls, nice mechanic, a bit high speed, but manageable. I'd probably cut game speed by 10/15%, feels a bit to fast, but again, manageable.
I liked the colors, didn't use the sound because it is high night here and people sleep. Wink

Played the first few screens and I liked it. Controls are nice and responsive and I was OK with the speed.  The sound is nostalgically grating  Roll Eyes

A good retro experience.  Only one slight hiccup - I got momentarily stuck on continuing the mission brief.  A bit embarrassing really as space bar is an obvious choice for 'button'.  I felt wasd, arrow keys or return should also be a viable choice.

Thank you both for the feedback so far.

Noted on the button/key for skipping the mission briefing, I'll add enter as an option.

Really neat, enjoyed playing it, thank you!
Maybe just a bit too much on the frustrating side, but I see why you might want it that way.
Me, I gave up after dyeing in sight of the second key.

How do you get past the hooks after the first key card door? Nice opening song btw. Also you could use something explaining what the keys do it took me a while to realize there was a jet pack and that you could switch it to the drill. You might want to make energy recharge instantly when you are on the ground just to make the experience a bit smoother, I know it doesn't make sense for energy to replenish like that but I found myself expecting it to work that way.

When the hook on the left is at it's highest you can run off the edge over the one on the right and drop down. The chains can't hurt, or anything coloured dark blue in the game in fact.

Thanks Smiley yea I drew them.

The cargo card is difficult to get. Just remember there's no time limit and all the obstacles are predictable (and reset each time you enter a room).

I really really liked the game!

The controls are great, the graphics are pretty neat and the sounds fit the game pretty well.

There are just two pieces of feedback that I would place here:

  • I really loved the intro music! It would be great to have the same kind of music throughout the game
  • For me at least, it would be more intuitive to have a faster recharge of the energy if the player is on the ground (maybe if the player does not move he will recharge the energy quicker?)

Great work so far!

Wonderful little game!
Love the artwork, reminds me of the good old times.. even though I had a c64 and not a spectrum. Smiley
Controls are perfect and I like the physics of the jetpack too.
Speed is ok to me.
The only thing that bugs me is the "miner" gun... I don't know, it's not satisfying both aesthetically and "aurally".
Maybe a "mining gun" could be more cool, but it could very well be a personal preference.
Good luck!

Thank you both for the feedback! Smiley

At this point I'm working on something new, but I definitely want to revisit Prime Mover, maybe in a sequel or new mission. The stuff about faster recharge, more music, and more weapons are all on my list.

I love this graphical style and seeing map images like that, so I had to try this out. I know you said you're finished with the game, but I thought I might as well share my thoughts since I tried it out. Maybe something I write will be useful in future projects.

-The gameplay felt pretty good, but I didn't like having to wait for the jetpack to recharge. I know it's not a long wait, but it still killed pacing a bit at times. Maybe as soon as you touch ground it should recharge quickly? Maybe the recharge rate could increase when you're standing still?

-Because I couldn't use both abilities at once, I completely forgot I had the drill and was confused that I had to attempt to make it past some enemies solely using perfect timing. It might be a good idea to put more drillable blocks in the way early on so players get used to switching often. Personally, I would've liked a separate button for the drill, but I guess you wanted to keep things more retro.

-The room designs seemed pretty good, although I wish there'd been more health pickups. I did find one room that seemed mostly pointless (just one health pickup and no other reason to go in there). I really liked the early room with the crushers that you can go under or use to get up high. I'm a big fan of multi-purpose environmental objects.

-I liked that there were checkpoints, but hated that there were limited continues. I just don't see the fun in repeating huge sections of the game that I've already gotten through, especially if they were easy. I was glad to see that I didn't have to re-collect key cards when using continues, though.

I didn't play that much, but I did like what I experienced and may play more later. I would've liked to put this in my "Inspiring Games" folder, and I was disappointed to see that there was no download. Any chance of one?

Thanks for the feedback! I agree with you on some points but I'll briefly go over the reasons for not changing some things.

I increased jetpack recharge speed slightly when on the ground in the final patch. In parts of the game though you need to burst again quickly away from danger after landing so energy use becomes a skill, so I left some small wait time in.

Most rooms with health pickups are off the main route and have a hazard to beat first, I was thinking about risk and reward. Difficulty is always hard to tweak but I was set on having one difficulty so I had to draw the line. Version 1.0 actually had no continues and even less health pickups!

You can download the HTML5 folder package from itch and gamejolt if you want to keep a copy. It's about 10mb and is much smaller than keeping an OS-specific version exported from Construct 2 (60mb for Windows!).
