I'm continuing to work on new features and one thing I'm quite proud of is this!

Whereas the game used to show you 2d portraits of the charactes when initiating a dialogue, the camera now zooms down to the 3d characters instead. The 3d models arent on par with the 2d sprites yet, but I think this method gives a much better sense of place and will also keep the build size of the game small by removing the 2d sprites

I've also added speech synthesis, so that one can now hear how words are pronounced.  This was surprisingly easy to implement, but I'm not quite 100% happy with the results. I'm using voiceRSS, if anyone has any other recommendations I'd be very grateful.

Hi! It's been a little while since my last post and since then I've been working on expanding the city! There's now not just the one street to explore, but a whole city district!
There isn't enough variation within the district yet and there are still lots of corners that aren't as pretty as they should be. But now that one can explore and find characters and different words to learn, the game finally feels like the vision I've had in my head for the last few months.

Also, Lingotopia has been accepted for the games showcase the at the Reversed Festival in Austria this July. www.reversed.at
You still have till the end of May to apply by the way.

So! Long time no post, but I've just released a new demo of the game on itch.io!

https://tristandahl.itch.io/lingotopia

You can now explore an entire city district, learn one of over a dozen languages and chat to some wonderful anthropomorphic animals.
The full changelog is too long to post here, but I'll go into detail on some of the features in another post soon. If you have time to play and give me some feedback it's always welcome and appreciated!

Thanks!

I've added weather effects to the game. The intention behind this is for one simply visual variety, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn how to say "It's windy", "It's snowing" or "It's raining" in the language you've chosen to learn. The inhabitants of the city will comment on the weather and by clicking on their speech bubble you'll learn what they say.

I love that polygonal weather, especially the snow! Simple but completely understandable.

Have you thought about shifting the lighting during various weather patterns? Right now, it just looks like it's snowing/raining while extremely sunny outside.

Still fantastic work thus far! I've been following since the early simple graphics because I love the concept, and I'm lurking around with every update. Bounds of improvements, I can't wait to see more!

thanks for the kinds words TheWanderingBen and Zireael!

I definitely should make it darker when it rains/snows and will add it to my to-do list. The day night cycle means it's more likely to be a bit darker than it looks during these daytime screenshots at least.

This makes me realize that I haven't posted a gif of the day night cycle! Since one should only ever add a day/night cycle to a game when night time looks as pretty as day time I came up with the idea of having fireflies light up the city at night. It means I can light up the streets and make the culture in Lingotopia a bit more exotic.

Also, I've made a mailing list for the game, feel free to subscribe if you want to be sure to stay up to date
eepurl.com/cv--31

I've approached a few traditional video game publishers after releasing the latest demo of the game and have gotten only rejections so far. If any of you know of game publishers that have experience in educational games then I'd be very grateful for tips. I think that might be a better avenue for me to pursue.

In order to prevent players from having to backtrack through large parts of the city, Lingotopia is going to have a public transport system. You'll be able to ride on boats along the aqueducts.

Inspired by bus stops in the city of Nagasaki. The bus stops are shaped like fruits and vegetables. This way you'll be able to click on them to learn the words for the corresponding fruit/vegetable.

The nagasaki bus stops

an apple

and a strawberry

If you want to help me out and add more translations to the game, well, that would be fantastic!

Hey!

I've been hard at work on the game. Both to make things prettier and on some gameplay features and system. Gradients to objects like trees and rocks make quite a big difference and are something I'd recommend if you're working on a lowpoly game.

Behind the scenes I've changed the way the translations for the game work.
The old version had a few problems:
1) words with multiple meanings could be incorrectly translated
2) words contained within other words (I'm looking at you Finnish) couldnt be learnt or translated.

The new system circumvents those problems, while also enabling to translations to be phrased to sound best in that language. I wrote a little blog post about it here if you're interested: https://medium.com/@LingotopiaGame/making-a-language-learning-game-for-all-languages-887589c70abc

On the business side of things I've begun thinking about running a kickstarter in a few months. But need to develop much more of a fanbase before that becomes a real option. Sigh!

Okay, that's it for today! Thanks for reading!

This weekend I posted in the language learning subreddit for the time. And it went really well!

The game was downloaded about 2000 times over the weekend. Loads more translations were added to the game and my mailing list (eepurl.com/cv--31) got 150 or so new subscribers! This is super important to me, since I'm beginning to plan a Kickstarter for November and really need to build up a bit of a fanbase by then.

One valid critique brought up in the reddit post was the fact that romanising the languages with different scripts in the game isn't really a valid solution. Since you never really run into romanisation when visiting a country or reading a book. So I've added support for different scripts to the game!

The game currently doesn't teach you how to read those scripts, it simply allows you to toggle between romanised and native scripts. But for those that can already read Cyrillic (for example), it now gives you an opportunity to practice. I'm planning to add a mechanic that'll teach you how to read different scripts.

Apart from Cyrillic, Hanzi, HIragana and Katakana are also planned for the next demo

Hi! Long time no post!

I've been hard at work on Lingotopia and have just released a new demo of the game!

https://tristandahl.itch.io/lingotopia

It has many new features including...
- a second city district. The bustling city center which has dozens of new words for you to learn.
-There are also many new languages to learn!
-And street musicians have arrived in the city to play some songs!
-Native script support allows you to toggle between latin and other scripts when learning  Russian, Chinese, Japanese or Greek.

I've decided no to do a Kickstarter campaign after all and will instead release the game as an Early Access title on itch.io early next year. I don't have the following yet to make a successful Kickstarter and don't want to risk losing a month of work on an failed attempt.

Okay! After a year of part time work and weekends spent in front of a desk Lingotopia is coming to Kickstarter! It’d be super nice if any of you would be willing to help out by contributing to the Thunderclap

https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/66403-lingotopia-on-kickstarter

I’ve decided to go for a 10 000 Euro funding goal, with my 264 mailing list subscribers I reckon I have a 50% chance of getting the money together. Hopefully I’ll be able to get games press and youtubers to cover the game, but I’m also super grateful that I don’t have to rely on them completely and can also turn to the language learning community. Cross fingers!

Didn't realise this game had a TIGSource thread, gonna follow this thread and try to get back into helping translate/edit Indonesian and some Japanese & Mandarin!

I've approached a few traditional video game publishers after releasing the latest demo of the game and have gotten only rejections so far. If any of you know of game publishers that have experience in educational games then I'd be very grateful for tips. I think that might be a better avenue for me to pursue.

Off the top of my head: Failbetter Games, Serenity Forge, ysbryd Games, maybe PQube might help. It might be good to push the angle of a "meaningful game" when approaching these publishers. Then again, it could be the pitch deck that's missing important info. Ping me if you want some help!

And sorry for forgetting to replay Sanud! Thanks so much for the translations! I'm giving the publisher angle a rest for now, since hopefully the Kickstarter will enable me to finish the game. But thanks for the recommendations!

After a busy four weeks, Lingotopia's Kickstarter campaign is coming to an end! Every cent will go towards making the game bigger and better, so if you want to lend the game a helping hand, now's the last chance!
kickstarter.com/projects/1843347561/lingotopia-a-language-learning-game

I'm super happy with how the Kickstarter's been going! I reached the funding goal after just over a week! Since then, it's been slow going, as I placed the stretch goal too high. I'm still very grateful though, I wouldn't have expected it to go this well!

Want to help spread the word? If you want to help me spread the word about the campaign in the twilight hours, then you're very welcome to
