Hi all, I’ve been working for a while on a platformer and I’m interested in getting some feedback, the game has a 2-bit retro feel and so far it has three playable areas (kind of levels).
The game has a simple story, you have to recover 3 sacred stones, they were stolen by the three bosses of the game (still haven’t started developing these bosses though).

A general feedback of the game would be very welcome, I’m also interested to know what bugs you could find and if the prototype is enjoyable so far.

 Game Features:

Game Features

  • Retro Action Platformer
  • Pixel Art style using a 4-color palette
  • Adaptive and unique soundtrack
  • Kill lots of enemies and three different bosses
  • Lots of area to explore
  • Find secrets and get your score as high as possible

 Controls:

  • Left or A: Move left
  • Right or D: Move right
  • Up or W: Look up
  • Down or S: Look down
  • Z or J: Attack
  • X or K: Jump

Thanks! Marcelo

Hi Marcelo, here's a little feedback:

I didn't like the text noises in the opening scene. They were too loud and annoying.

I did like the way the music changed in different areas and the challenge of the spikes (even though they were a little unpredictable  Wink).

What I think could help make the game a little better is some kind of scrolling functionality so that you can see what you're dropping down to below you.

Overall, I enjoyed it! Keep up the good work Smiley

Thanks for the feedback nu_muso! I'll work on that annoying and loud text sfx  Smiley

I'm thinking maybe I can make Shawy crouch to allow him to see what's below, I'll give it a try.

I've just uploaded a new build (v0.022) on https://shawyadventures.itch.io/shawy-adventures

 The new controls are:

  • Left or A: Move left
  • Right or D: Move right
  • Up or W: Look up
  • Down or S: Look down
  • Z or J: Attack
  • X or K: Jump

 Changelog (v0.019 to v0.022):

  • Fixed window resolution setting.
  • Enemies will re-spawn after 4 mins (of game time) and only the first kill adds points to the score.
  • Fixed bug with movement on horizontal platforms.
  • New game mechanic, Shawy can look up or down using the up/down controls, jump is now assigned to button b (x or k key).
  • Shawy will now lose air when under water, and after all the air is gone he will start losing health.
  • Improved text SFX.
  • Hearts will re-spawn after 2 mins of being taken.
  • Coin will no longer reappear when changing to previous areas if it was previously taken.
  • Implemented a new font for the HUD, "Micro Full 6x3" by russelleh.
  • New logo for main menu.
  • Implemented fade in/out effects.
  • Added a new level.
  • Added a dialog when the player is near the gate for a while.

And here's a gif showing a bit of the gameplay for the latest version:

Thanks! Marcelo

The game is fun to play! I have good memories of games in this style, as I used to play a lot of the original GameBoy. There is a lot more content here than I was expecting for a prototype-stage game.  I also quite like the custom soundtrack. I found myself humming along to the tune as I played!

I created a video of my playthrough of the game, if anyone wants to see it in action:

Some small issues I had with the game:

There is some kind of auto-localisation at the main menu, that changes the text from english to my language. It feels a bit weird since the rest of the game is in english.

Whenever you land from a jump, the camera snaps down a bit.

Whenever you collect or kill something, the thing slowly fades out, which makes it feel like there is a delay in the action.

The only way to skip throught text and to interact with save points is to press enter, that is not a very good button for this kind of stuff.

Also, the controls screen is a bit fucked up.

All was tested in Windows 10, on v0.028

here are some things i picked up on while playing

- sound effects are too quiet compared to the music
- pickups fading out of existence after being collected looks very strange in a "2-bit" game
- your jump having a fixed height is frustrating
- you fall so fast and have such little room to see things below you that falling at any point can cause you to get hurt with no way of preventing it. the looking down feature doesn't really help this - not only can you only use it while standing, it would dramatically slow down gameplay if you used it every time
- the saber isn't a very satisfying weapon. it's close range, has a long cooldown, and generally doesn't feel good to use
- your player controls fairly well, albeit without much weight behind them
- the first level didn't seem to have much clear direction on where you're going next, but i also didn't feel rewarded for exploring (at one point i jumped into a pool of water to see what was next and promptly got my ass bit by a fish... and there was nothing else there!) i also had to wait in place for a while every so often to make sure there wasn't an up-and-down platform nearby

hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback guys, I've worked on the issues you've reported and tried to fix them all, I've just released a new version that contains these fixes and more changes as well, the full changelog can be checked on this page: https://shawyadventures.github.io/changelog/
The new version can be downloaded on itch.io as usual: https://shawyadventures.itch.io/shawy-adventures#download

I'd really appreciate some feedback on the new changes, like the variable jump, the mini-map function and looking down/up (it can be used while moving now).

Thanks!

I also don't like the item fade out, it takes too long. If you made them start blinking during the fade it would help.

Thanks the tip, did you check out the latest version? I've made the fade shorter.
