It seems like a cool mechanic to me but I'm not sure if it's been used/overused, and no amount of googling has helped me so far.

I am interested in games that involve blocking the player off from their previous path, although you can jump in mario bros. 2, the sand makes it clunky and forces most players to commit to their path.

Has anyone seen this done in other games? As a mini-game or a related mechanic of softly committing the player to their path?

Some more of "You create paths, but something is following you along the paths you're making, so you have to keep going":

  • Digger (http://playdosgamesonline.com/digger.html) was another classic game of the Dig-Dug sort.
  • Starseed Pilgrim is basically doing this, with the corruption spreading out on the platforms you're building.
  • If I remember correctly, QIX had sparks that could follow along the paths you were making.  (Not that you needed additional motivation not to backtrack, though.)

Limited ability to turn and attack your chasers is important, I think, for the feel.  (Like in Mario 2, those ShyGuys are tough to get at, if I remember correctly.)  So you can't just exterminate everything on the screen and dig/build in peace.

For a twist on the concept, in the dig "levels" in Ōkami, you're not being chased but something, but fighting against the clock to reach your goal while also making sure the one you're guiding doesn't get hurt.
