I was looking for a topic about the last Global Game Jam, which happened this past weekend (from January 20 to January 22, 2017). This year's theme was "Waves".

Since I didn't see one, I thought it would be interesting to start this so we could talk about how we did it, where, with whom and of course post our entries to play them.

For my part, I joined Gandia's jam site (Valencia, Spain). We were a team of three programmers and two artists, we made a simple local multiplayer game for two people. It is called Win And Vex Enemies, you have to kill your oponent by shooting waves of bullets, protect yourself activating a shield and reload picking energy cells. If you want to try it, this is the link: http://globalgamejam.org/2017/games/win-and-vex-enemies

Now is your turn! Post your GGJ2017 games!

It is pretty solid and polished. I find it a bit hard to move the ship, but maybe it is because I am not good with these sort of games. But I like the idea of waves moving you, having to avoid the borderline of the stage. And it has different play modes, ships, stages... It has a lot of work behind it, moreover, you were only two people on the team. So yeah, you can be proud of it :D

I have played two-three times with my brother, it is a really original and funny concept. The minimalistic graphics are what I like the most.

Hi all =)

"I, Ocean" is a game concept build, winner of GlobalGameJam17: Moscow (local site).

You are the astronaut crashed on unknown oceanic planet.
It appears, that the Ocean itself is alive, conscious, intelligent.
If you want to survive, you have to establish contact. But how to talk with such godlike alien mind?
In this game we tried to comprehend the essence of communication.
The language. The concepts.
First, you have to learn how to ask for an essentials to prolong your life. But if you want to leave this planet, you need abstract concepts. And the primary is "I".

Here are the steam concept page

What do you think about it?

I haven't played it yet, but I've seen the Steam concept page and video. I find it an interesting concept, although I don't really get if there's some internal logic or it's just an exploration (kind of trial-error-experimentation) game. In any caes, the idea behind is nice, and with more polish and a deeper narrative it could become a very interesting game.

I worked on sound design and music for two games, one of which is "Echo's Song", where you play as a baby bat trying to navigate a dark cavern to find your Bat Dad:

The cavern is pitch black, but you can temporarily see the environment by using one of your limited number of echolocation pulses. Find your way through the cave, avoiding hidden dangers along the way.

http://globalgamejam.org/2017/games/echos-song

Here's the four tracks I produced for the game too:

https://soundcloud.com/hadurant/sets/echos-song-global-game-jam

It's the title theme, cavern theme, game over theme, and the ending theme where you're reunited with the Bat Fam :')
I had a lot of fun writing these, and tried a bunch of techniques I was unfamiliar with before. I guess that's part of the whole reasoning behind the jam!

We did our global game jam game to Gear VR. We wanted to tie the theme to our setting, so we ended up making Pirate Captain simulator.

We also wanted to make it into control-/handsfree VR experience. So things activate through player gaze.

This was fifth game jam we did our project to VR, and somewhere between 20th -30th jam I have taken part of.

Pirate Captain. Here's a playthrough (recorded from unity editor)

This year we, for the second time, organized Global Game Jam in Ukraine. The theme was really cool – "WAVES". I particularly liked that it allowed multiple creative interpretations.

During the jam I was busy with organizational questions, but at night between Saturday and Sunday I managed to cut several hours from my sleep and made my own prototype.

So, the idea is such: imagine a water sufrace. When you drop a pebble into it, the waves start spreading from the centre. Now let's look at this process from the opposite side: where should you drop the pebble to create the waves of particular shape? Taking into account that the waves reflect from the walls of the basin, this can be a very interesting question.

Here's how the gameplay looks like (gif)

During the post-jam week I completed the game and now I'm ready for release.

Among the new features there are:
  • various waves shapes (triangle, square, etc)
  • sounds of real ocean waves which accompany your play
  • cellular grid to help you aim better
  • scoring system
  • storage of player's score history

You are welcome to check the game and share your suggestions. It can be downloaded from PlayMarket.

Tools used:
  • Flash Develop - IDE
  • Starling - graphics engine
  • Enhance - quick ads and analytis integration (it took me 3 minutes to integrate the banner, interlevel ads and retention measuring)
  • Physics engine is of my own Smiley

General,

I love your idea. Quite interesting! As soon as I saw the animations, I read what you do in the game, so it communicates well.

Hello Jammers !

I was about to post our game on the Townhall, but I guess it makes sense to stop here first.
We attended the GGJ in Paris, specifficaly the Isart Digital school (great spot btw).

Our game is called V.H.S : Video.Horror.Story, it's a first person horror game where the player can change the frequency of the camera to reveal either the environment or the monsters. But only one at a time.

We posted the game on gamejolt 2 days ago and are very happy (dare I say surprised ?) about the game's reception for now.

Here is the link : https://gamejolt.com/games/v-h-s-video-horror-story/230087

We would love to hear your thoughts aswell !

Ah, cool! Perhaps the location organizer can enter geo coordinates into the location data, to let it be shown on the map.

I am surprised there is not more activity in this thread. I would have thought a lot of us would have GGJ projects to show off.

They all look great, it seems this GGJ's games has really nice art. By the way, VHS creeps me a lot. I specially like General's game idea, it's a very clever use of the theme.

Hey guys,

Sorry we are kinda late to the party!

We made Duel on board.

Duel on board is a competitive local multiplayer that takes place in a weird physics pirate ship. The game is very simple, the first one to shoot the other one wins the round.

You can play it here if you want.

Controls:
Player 1: A - Jump S - Shoot
Player 2: L - Jump K - Shoot

Cheers!  Gentleman
