Musically it's quite nice but production wise the guitar sounds super robotic. A dynamic and expressive instrument (like acoustic guitar) should not be emulated unless you really know what you're doing, in my opinion. I'd go looking for a different sound for the melody. The whistle sounds nice though Grin
Also first time through that off-beat tamb was "off putting", as I automatically thought it was "on the beat" at first.
Another ALSO... the wild west is "desert". A minimalist approach to composition might reflect that better. Listen to some Morricone.

All the best!

edit: After quickly skimming through your other tunes, I'd say this particular track is no where near your usual standard. Your other stuff is really great!

Thanks Leo! Yeah the acoustic guitar is a bastard. I really need to record a guitarist for this one!

The whistle is just the Logic Pro  X whistle instrument. Was considering recording myself but it actually sounds great!

Thanks for checking out my stuff! You have some excellent pieces too; the whole of Director's Dreams is great.

Hey Jed. I think it sounds really nice melodically. I think the tempo could and rhythm could be seen as western-y (horse riding) and the tambourine sounds reminds me of spurs which I really like. And I like when the instruments are obviously sampled if that is intentional it reminds me of old computer games. Smiley So the games art is simplistic then I think that sort of thing fits. If its not supposed to be intentional then yeah guitar is hard to get right. When I use samples I use this company's https://www.orangetreesamples.com/

But I don't feel like the melody on its own is very western-y and the tempo, melody, and whistle (which could sound like a pan flute) reminds me of music from the Andes and a little Caribbean (pirate game music) too.

I'm too not versed in musical terms but I'd make the melody less happy<-? IDK more minor or pentatonic based. Sorry I don't know how to say it.

I am working on a western OST right now too and here are some things you can use to spice things up. Solo trumpet, whip cracks, tremolo guitar, vibraslap, shakers, slide guitar, old rusty sounding steel string guitars, old sounding electric guitars, detuned piano, more vibrato on the whistling, and tubular bells.

Best of luck!

Also at 1:49 you seem to have an audio glitch.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the detailed feedback! The game certainly suits the more playful instrument choices, and yes the MIDI feel is exactly what I was going for. By the way, really glad you liked the "spurs" tambourine, I felt that an off-beat pattern would really emphasise that aspect.

I'll keep in mind everything else you suggested, you raise some valid points.

Cheers again Smiley
