Hi, after huge brainstorm session I came up with wildcat studio. So I checked if it's available. And I found this:

https://sites.google.com/site/wildcatgamedesign/

And on their website I found video:

https://sites.google.com/site/wildcatgamedesign/video/meet-the-wildcats

In the middle of video of "founders" I decided to take risk and take name, but....In the end I saw also copyright sign.

So i was curious if those kids are bluffing or not? I searched on https://www.uspto.gov and https://copyright.gov and http://www.datalog.co.uk and found nothing.

I don't know US or UK law so I'm asking. Maybe somebody know...

Not a great name, I'd keep looking. Also the name of your studio isn't very important so I wouldn't spend much time on it.

https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks-getting-started/trademark-basics/trademark-patent-or-copyright

As far as I know, you don't have to register a patent or trademark in order to have copyright on your created content.

Later edit: what I mean is that anybody can put a copyright sign on the website, doesn't protect the name. This is the role of the trademark registration.

Copyright is automatic, yes. You have a copyright on everything you've ever created that is eligible for copyright, period. And also yes it would be a trademark issue, not a copyright issue. In some countries trademarks don't necessarily have to be registered to be valid.

Also i watched that video (lmao) and i think they meant to say there's a copyright on the video, which is technically true but also kinda irrelevant.

EDIT: Not super familiar with US law, but I think in the US, you have an option to register your copyright which makes it easier to defend in court. But the copyright exists regardless of whether it's registered or not.

Wildcat sounds like a name for pornographic endeavours.

Copyright aside, naming yourself similar to something else is pure SEO nightmare. After we already started making and talking about our game Viktor, we found another game called Viktor, a League of Legends character called Viktor, a Paladins character called Viktor, and now a Serbian animator is making a new project called Viktor. Also, a Hungarian prime minister is called Viktor. We'll never get to top of google, ever Cry

I just hope LoL never makes a skin for Viktor that they call "steampunk" D:

Names of companies can't be copyrighted. They can be trademarked, but that's different.

Stealing those kids' name probably isn't going to cause any legal issues for you but it would make you kind of an awful person and possibly damn your immortal soul to an eternity of suffering in heck. Can't you, like, come up with another name?

Yeah, if you are not directly comnected to wildcats, it shouldn't be a problem to choose another name.

I'd call it Trade Mark© & Copy Right™
Actually, Trade Art & Copy Right sounds better...

haha same

also tbh, your studio name doesn't really matter. most players care about games, not developers.

Is 'story' the words, the meaning, or the telling?

Go with 'Cat Wilde' and if anyone asks: your two absolute favourite things are cats and Oscar Wilde (not necessarily in that order).

Your logo can be the picture of a cat dressed up as Dorian Grey. Or Dorian Grey dressed up as a cat, again, doesn't matter.

Edit:
Google found me a splendid reference:

Actually, just go with 'Copyright Conundrum' as the name and you'll be set.
