Hi!

I'm thinking of maybe adding some 3D stuff to my 2D game and was wondering if y'all know of any good examples.

Ragnarok is one of the only examples I know of:

Although it's not quite what I'm thinking. A closer example is GTA 2:

Any others?

if youre gonna put sprites in a 3d game give it an isometric view so you only need to make 2

Those are all interesting examples. I think Paper Mario comes closest to integrating the two, maybe because they also use 2d sprites in the background? (Grass, trees, etc.)

I think the GTA 2 example could also be improved with the same technique, e.g. adding 2D awnings and decor on the buildings on the Z-axis.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a good example. The main characters and enemies are rendered using 2D vector animations, but the backgrounds are entirely 3D.

There's a lot that can be done with this sort of approach, what you really need to be thinking about is what type/style of game you're hoping to make. This will significantly affect how your 2D/3D combination works together.

Not to be a party pooper but this style is in the same ugly/dated category as prerendered 3d to me. More often than not the sprites don't mesh with the 3d environments and everything looks janky and disjointed. Just like prerendered 3D i think it CAN be pulled off (breath of fire 4 still looks pretty) but it's very hard to get it right.

That's an interesting and relevant opinion to me so could you give me some feedback please?

hmm, i guess your game looks ok (as does doom btw) because there isn't a harsh disconnect between the 2d and 3d elements.

i think paper mario does it best, and i'm not sure if it's because of the art itself or the fact that the game constantly reminds you that everything is made of paper so it just seems more natural than other games.

Technicalities apart. I think it blends so well that people don't even think of DOOM as a 3D game with 2D sprites.

i wonder if it's not nostalgia that makes those early era fps work. (and also their good design)

i remember hating Capcom vs Snk 2 , Mark of the Millennium 2001 because 3d background and huge sprite didn't blend well. (or because of frame rate drop)

I meant in terms of combining 3d rendering with 2d sprites (which is what this thread is about)
