Since I got my first PC and started working with it, I was interested in computer fonts. When I discovered ASCII-art, I instantly fell in love with it. And now I have decided to program a game with ASCII-art which runs in a MonoGame application. I will post some screenshots here or in the DevLog section soon. I can't be the only one who loves this kind of art, so show us some of your ASCII-work! This thread is now officially approved by standardcombo!

Heads up for everyone: If you want to try making ASCII art but don't have the patience to type it out, check out REXPaint. It's an awesome tool that lets you export in plain text. It's made by the same guy developing Cogmind!

If programming is an art form, then here's my contribution: Back in the late 80's I created a UNIX multiplayer (terminal based) shoot-em-up which has ASCII explosions, bullets and players!. I decided to port the game to Android which also supports local multiplayer (up to 8 players). Unfortunately the user interface didn't work as well as keyboard input. You can download the full version apk from here: http://www.retro-maze.com/RetroMaze.apk

Would be nice to get [ascii] [/ascii] brackets, no? With better font and spacing.

It makes me throw my arms up in despair... ___ /.-,\ .--. (´ o´ (:¯`.\ \`. .-. `o \`. ) \ //o' `.´/_ `-.,-´/ \O/ .´)(o ) .--'´ _ (='_.´.-`,-, '._ o,\ /`\--´ ) )/`-.`._.'/ '^-´ `---´

Nice! That's the only one that looks to be used in the game. Look forward to animating it!

Hmm, in my game it looks a bit different... And in my animation the first frame isn't included.

Skipping the first frame now makes sense. Ascii art is essentially very low res graphics, so movement would play a large role in the perception. It's amazing how much the mind will 'fill in the details' when there is rapid movement.
