the ico example is a heart breaker. i wonder how many people passed on the game based on the crummy cover alone. while the japanese cover is a work of art! fumito ueda painted it himself, apparently, based onthe works of de Chirico ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_de_Chirico. de Chirico was definitely the first thing that came to mind when I saw that cover. It's really sad actually, to think how much N. America has cheapened the video game industry by playing into that game of having a cover with CG on it. It's sad really. Ico looks so much more appealing based on the Japanese cover.

This thread is eerily turning into another one of those trite "America sucks because their games are XYZ" threads, so here's the Hardcore Gaming 101 article to show that in America we make covers loud, garrishly ugly, and with action 3d renders loosely based on the games (which says "Hey! Lookit me I'm loud and maybe the game has graphics as smooth and garish as this!! And you get to play another balding space-marine!! Huzzah for insulting your intelligence!") while in Japan they collage all the characters together and make them anime (which says "Hey, this game could've been made in Japan! Do you think Americans or Europeans can drawn anime like this?! Buy me you xenophobic culturally brainwashed zombie!!") http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/japanboxes/japanboxes.htmalso fun: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=0&cId=3153317

I really love this box art. I hope the Wii version makes it to the states... Japanese version is has a very simple beauty to it's design.

I think someone mentioned the direct inspiration earlier. Yep, they did, the ico example is a heart breaker. i wonder how many people passed on the game based on the crummy cover alone. while the japanese cover is a work of art! fumito ueda painted it himself, apparently, based onthe works of de Chirico ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_de_Chirico. I don't know about you guys, but I always felt this was probably the worst game cover ever (besides Megaman 1).

Surely you mean best!? A fat baby drooling a bubble of blood with a tattoo on its head and wearing sunglasses that reflect one of the best games ever(overstatement)! Actually that sounds like the work of a serial-baby-killer (the blood bubble and tattoo part.) I actually never knew box art could be anything but crappy (mediocre/flambuoyant at best). I've never seen the foreign kind.

Ahhh, Master System... (US/EU) Compared to Japan's (still average but not horrific)... The worst, though: (US/EU) No comparison to a Japanese version, as it's a modification of an entirely different game called Anmitsu Hime apparently. I'm glad they don't do things like that anymore.
