Hey there!

We are Abylight Studios, Spanish developers with roots going back to 2004. Previously, we worked in Cursed Castilla (a game that sadly we didn’t talked about here before). Now, we want to fix this sharing with you Super Hydorah, a nonlinear horizontal shmup that takes inspiration from genre classics such Gradius, R-Type, Darius or Turrican.

The game is a three-band collaboration between Locomalito, Gryzor87 and Abylight. Super Hydorah is being developed with Game Maker Studio in combination with our own engine.

Our aim is to keep this devlog updated as soon as we make progress, talking about technical and creative features. Feel free to ask anything you want.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Grin

Yes, as Fat Pug Studio said, the game is non-linear like in the regular Hydorah. You can choose the path through the planets with alternative routes

Hello everyone! Today we want to start with a story.

A story of a child. A child who saw a video game for the first time in the 80s but didn't’ catch his attention...Until he saw an arcade machine: Phoenix.

That game changed his conception about video games. Starships fighting against giant birds in the space. That scenario unleashed his imagination Where those birds came from? How is their planet? What are their reasons against mankind?

After this first encounter, many more came afterwards: Gradius, R-Type, Darius, Side Arms, Salamander… Each one more spectacular than the previous one. Neither difficulty nor the lack of coins could defeat his curiosity to see how the next planet was.

When he didn’t have the skills or the money to reach his purpose, the kid spent hours watching other people playing the games, memorizing the levels and learning their tactics. The child was unaware of it, but he was learning the intern design of those games.

The kid grew up among starship sketches and dreams about his own games. Unreachable dreams for a kid, he thought. Or that was what he thought until he achieved one of the biggest feat of his life: finishing R-Type after two years of determination, love, hate and losing four credits every week in the arcade.

That changed everything forever. Suddenly, nothing was impossible for the kid, even create his own game.

That was the start of the genesis of this game. A low heat elaboration and evolution of Super Hydorah. A dream come true of a child that loves the shmups.

We hope that you have enjoyed this tale. We’ll keep updating with more info about the creation of Super Hydorah. As always, feel free to suggest any topic to write about here.  Smiley

Hi everyone!

First of all, we want to say thank you for all your comments! They are much appreciated!

Secondly, we want to remind you that today we will show Super Hydorah in public at the European Game Showcase at GDC (https://soops.net/european-game-showcase-at-gdc-2017-games-in-alphabetical-order/) so, come and check it out!  Hand Joystick If you are not able to see it, drop us a comment here, and we can show you the game during the rest of the week Smiley

Finally, for the next update we want to talk about the influences Hydorah had during its birth, and a lot of them come from many mid-late-1980s shmups. We're quite busy this week because of the GDC17, but we'll write as soon as posible. Stay tuned!  Wink
