I saw this today, and thought I'd share it. It's a member of Introversion describing how 2008 was for them. Lots of things went wrong. Part 1Part 2Part 3

Ouch. Yeah, I can see how something like that can be pretty devastating, and it's nice to see that they're still going. Never retreat, never surrender. Or so they say.

Damn, that sounds painful. Let's hope darwinia+ nets them some cash so they can continue working on Subversion. I really want to see that finished.

Well maybe if they didn't spend their original Uplink riches on new cars and all that luxurious stuff they described in various interviews they wouldn't be having this problem now. I find it hard to feel sorry for people who spend their money like that. When you do well, save it, don't spend it.

Is it amusing that "the last of the bedroom coders" now consider themselves "'older' indie" or is that a bit too convoluted.
Also the darwinian in part 2 looks a little uncomfortable in the junk area.

It's obvious they made mistakes, and were a bit overexcited by the money they got. I hope they learned their lesson.

That slogan never did make a bit of sense. I do hope they finish subversion, it looked really fascinating!

A heartbreaking story that many can learn from. I'm preparing for all the bullshit that I will encounter on the road ahead, and this is quite a frightening tale :I

Maybe they meant they're the last of the bedroom coders who actually have office space, a marketing department, and 1 million British pound budgets for their games.

When you make enough money to buy a fast car, you buy a fast car. When you don't make enough money anymore, you just sell the car and use public transportation.

Yes, but they were using the *company's* money as if it were their own. Money earned from a product needs to be reinvested in a company, it's not like they were only spending the money they earned as some sort of salary, they were using everything. They spent 10,000 british pounds in a single joy week during the gdc for instance -- that's as much as some people make in a year.

They were the whole company, though, and probably got a bit carried away when they suddenly landed £160k+. They made a mistake and they know it. I don't know why that would disqualify them from a bit of pity now. And yes, the "last of the bedroom programmers" thing is a bit outdated.

Because most normal people would not get carried away like that; it says something about their character.

It says something about your character that you constantly try to pick apart other people's decisions.
