(Moved this from where I first put it in the introductions thread...)

Well here's some piccies:-

It's taken about six weeks from scratch, and so far it features such things as variable height floor and ceiling, different lighting levels and 50% translucent sprites.  It moves fast and smooth too.

The square grid map may be the one thing more Wolfenstein than Doom, but it's ideal for the purpose I have in mind for it... Grin

Currently trying to put together a distributable demo app, I would put it up on YouTube but CamStudio doesn't seem to get along well with grabbing full-screen movement on my 'puter...

Yeah, interesting. I hope Flash had the kind of horsepower that Java has. In Rombo i went to great lengths to make sure the game runs in an acceptable framerate which included precomputing a bunch of lookup tables for the floor/ceiling height perspective, which practically means that i can't even have proper head bobbing :-).

Although array access in Flash is shit, so i'm thinking that if i try software 3D engine next time to use something like Doom (vectors), but i don't feel like writing a world editor for this :-P.

Not sure about the full ins-and-outs of Open Source in its full definition, but I think I'll make the source available when I'm completely happy with it, which might be a few weeks.  Should be a lot easier to understand than the Wolfenstein or Doom source. Grin I've put a demo up, see this thread where I think it's more appropriate to post WiP.

Smiley

Nice effort at a Java raycaster - one of the better ones I've seen going around

I've tried running it on Java 5 upate 18 (Windows XP machine), and it runs fine - I have noticed that it hangs on Java 6 update 17 though... strange (maybe there's a bug in Java 6, will probably try update 18 later)

Any news on the source code? Very interested in this code, looks great  Hand Thumbs Up Left

Agreed, I'm just learning Java too, so it would be great to be able to see some code to dissect and try to understand  Durr...? Message me if you do!
