Hello

I'll try to be concise with this question! There are many pipelines I could go down so really interested to hear your experience / advice you might have.

I need to model a large environment for a mobile game, so far I have made a blockout in Maya for prototyping purposes.

What pipeline would you suggest I use?

Requirements of my terrain

 - I need very fine detail over the shape of some areas
 - Textured
 - Spawns grass around the player
 - Works with unity nav mesh baking
 - Well optimised, some environments are more like large corridors

Option 1 - Use Unitys Terrain

I'd like to bake a height map from Maya & import this into my terrain. Anyone had experience of this process?

Option 2- Use custom Geometry

How do I create a grass system for custom geometry? Urgh.

Option 3 - Third Party solution (Gaia?)

Never used this. Seems like i'll encounter the same kind of problems as I do with unitys terrain system though.

Option 4 - ?

Suggestions would be nice.

Thanks!

Unity's terrain is performance heavy so it's a no-no for mobile. Just fake the terrain with a flat mesh. Make the grass a mesh or more likely a billboard texture and spawn it via script.
