    Mezzo Alter is an rpg about finding your grandfather after he wakes up in the middle of the night unexpectedly and leaves your house. This event soon throws you into something that will decide the fate of the universe (or two)!

    I have been devoting most of my freetime to this passion project. Here are some statistics on how I am doing right now. (May be rough estimates)

    Text-boxes: 100%

    Battle: 100%

    Overworld Movement: 100%

    Engine: 85%

    Inventory: 75%

    Save system: 5% (Saving for last)

    Entire game as a whole : 5%  

    Decided I can't make the game I want to, so currently making mockups to show a future programmer what I want.

    And last but not least, here are some screenshots to prove i'm working on the game!

    Planned features (Half of these are already in the game!)

    • Open world that doesn't force you to follow the plot, but would like you to take a break from traveling to do other things.
    • Fast, extensive battle system.
    • Day and night
    • Extensive side quests (EX: Visit every town in the game)
    • Focus on decision making in battles.
    • An easy way to get special attack points.
    • Public transit
    • Equippable items aren't character specific, but would work better on certain characters.
    • Chrono trigger like character recruiting.
    • Multiple different ways for events to play out.

    Nice clean bright graphics! It's like a non-isometric version of Earthbound, which I actually prefer! Smiley

    It looks like you have a ton done, almost everything besides the save system, so why is the game completion at 5%? How long have you been working on this?
    Also, what's the special feature on the HP box? Listing the RP, which I assume is like MP or PP or TP, except...Radical Points?  Well, hello there!

    Annnnd what's the story behind the name? And to what degree are things like battle similar to Earthbound (beyond the obvious aesthetic)?

    And finally, who are the different characters?! I wanna see some more pics of locales and monsters. Does it get wild and crazy?!

    Thanks a ton! The reason why the completion is at 5 percent is mainly because I still have a lot of plans for the game, mainly for the overworld. There are also percentages I forgot to mention such as the plot of the game. I'm done right now with the first 30 minutes of the story (If you are just running through the plot without doing anything else). I've been working on this game since late November of 2016 bit I got serious in January.

    The special feature is on the outer rims. On some screenshots, Portions of the health boxes will be colored with a lighter shade. When the whole box gets filled up, you get Rp equal to your level.


    Mezzo is usually referred to in music as "half". A good example would be MezzoPiano, which is "Half loud". Alter is obviously to change. This has something to do with the games story, trust me. The battle system is more similar to Mother 2(Earthbound) because no sound battles. There is a wider amount of special abilities that characters can access. These usually complement their base stats pretty well. The battle flow is also considerably faster than Earthbounds. So id say like %45(?)

    I'm still working on the characters along with the locations and enemies. The story definitely has its ups and downs.

    It's looking very interesting, so far. Plenty of room for more Earthbound-style games IMO! Is this being done in Game Maker? Do we get to play as Pube Voice?

    And I was also wondering what engine you are using. Mine is in RPG Maker and it's taken a year and a half so far...  WTF

    Totally feeling that Earthbound vibe!

    I love the non-isometric nature of it, as well. Can see inspiration from Undertale, as well!

    The game is being made in game maker studio 1, and sadly, you cannot play as Pube voice. But trust me, there are better characters to play as.

    "Alter" also means "man" in a casual sense in German, so I think that also threw me off. The title sounds like it came from a non-English language, so I guess that's why I was confused. Though I guess Mezzo is from Italian, too, so...

    Anyway, nice Earthbound-like backgrounds and effects in the gifs you linked to!

    I imagine his voice is incredibly nasally, and really hard to listen to.

    I put in a test enemy today that can't be defeated. Mainly because I'm going to be testing a lot of new mechanics and moves this month Wink

    Sorry for not updating for so long! I've been working on some aspects to make the game stand of a bit more from the mother series. I decided to not rip off the grass and make a unique texture that I think looks better.



    And I'm always trying to make the game look nice.

    I've improved a lot in the course of a year. I used to rely on bad line work and pillow shading but now I think I can create passable pixel art. Here's what I mean.

    The guy on the left is from a failed attempt at an earthbound inspired game that would probably make the sub genre look bad more than anything. I like some of the designs even to this day so I decided to recreate a few.
