Where can I find truetype fonts, assuming I need fonts which are either public domain or have very lax licensing?

There's some amazing stuff on Fontstruct but most of that is decorative fonts, I'm looking for some more basic workaday text fonts. Not sure where to begin looking for such things-- any advice?

(Particularly I'm looking for something that can look attractive in a UI, and most specifically I'm looking for something that can play nice with Freetype.)

Thanks much guys.

Actually going to toss in some links myself, here are some suggestions that were given to me by my friend pmdboi:

"exljbris" is a professional font designer who makes some of his fonts available for free, although he doesn't seem to have a license for redistribution:
http://www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/

"gyre" has taken a number of the canonical text fonts and converted them to freetype (with hinting... though that doesn't help one if one is using truetype)
http://www.gust.org.pl/projects/e-foundry/tex-gyre/

"SIL" has some fonts under the Open Font License:
http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&cat_id=FontDownloads#a4a644ae

And apparently "deja view" takes the Vera fonts and internationalizes them:

This one, by me Smiley

It's in windows FON format, and is best used at size 6 or 12.

AFAIK and IANAL, but ISTR that if you are using a bitmap of the font, and not actually distributing the TTF or source font, then you should be okay to use it - but again, I'm not a lawyer and may be wrong.
