So I'm assuming many of you have seen the trailer for cactus new game about killing everything you love:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTY494iujdA&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.indiegames.com%2Fblog%2F&feature=player_embedded

What I'm asking, as a long time GM user (who's messed around with the 3D stuff), is how the f*@# does he do that with Game Maker?  Shocked Grin

So from the video I can tell he's drawing basic cubes and transforming them, but as the video gets closer to the end it all becomes so much more amazing!

Anyway, what do you all think?

I think he's just messing with the draw parameters of each cube object based on its position relative to the player.  Starting with that basic concept, he just messes with different parameters or combinations of parameters within the draw event of each cube, searching for interesting outcomes.

Or, I could be completely wrong Smiley

That's what it looks like to me. He did a lot of that in the Mondo games (that maze with the rising walls, those platforms that move in relation to the player). Looks like he's just building on that. Look at the part from :06 to :07 with the green stairs. They're just rotating by a certain amount farther the player gets from them.

GM supports DLLs right? So a DLL can provide some OpenGL context.

I'm just guessing here.

yes. there's a wide variety of dll's -- someone even got the irrilict 3d engine to work under gm using dll's.

Seems like he's warping maps. He transforms the map and draws cubes/objects at transformed positions. Not much of an explanation, sorry to say.

Thanks for all the replies guys; quite enlightening to be sure.  Smiley

I think once it's out and we're playing it we should be able to get pretty close to figuring it all out.  Smiley
