That being said, how do you plan to keep the multiplayer active? Even the more popular indie multiplayer games have trouble keeping people on the server. That's currently a big problem for invisigun, so I'm wondering if you have some alternative solution like pve or bots

At the moment it's only local multiplayer, if it makes sense and a lot of people play it, then it's something we would like to add. It's like you said, you need a lot of people to play before it makes sense. We are also going to add a arcade mode, where you fight against waves of enemies, alone or co-op with a friend. So even if you don't have a buddy by your side you will still be able to play.
