feed your alien customers in outer orbit sushi... so far i've been working on a basic ruleset as well as some art and animation.

Okay, I've been playing games for quite some time and I know when I'm going to get addicted to a game. This is one of them.

thank you all for the kind words!

i was able to add a bit more choreography and animation yesterday. here is an animation of the three eyed alien eating:

i've been using unity's built-in components to have the aliens walk about (navmesh, mecanim, etc). it's been surprisingly tough to get the movement exactly right. so far it's a kludge of overriding certain behaviors at certain times; from what i can tell that is most people's experience  Shrug. either way, i hope to spend a few cycles on the ruleset and gameplay next.

i decided to simplify the gameplay from my initial design sketch. originally, i had wanted to make a puzzle where the player traced out a path that could complete the aliens' orders. this turned out to be incredibly fiddly. here is where it ended up:

my thought was, since tracing out the paths is a bit tedious, what if there were only two buttons: left and right? you choose the customer and the game automatically connects the subgraph of like plates for you. new plates then fill in from the opposite side.

having plates fill in from two directions instead of one has been surprisingly fun to play. once you get the hang of it, you can think one or two moves ahead and line up a big collect; two options gives you just enough choice to be satisfying.

next i will try to layer some rules on top to create a progression / challenge.

working on a third alien character:

trying to use a little physics to get some randomness into the animations.

i reworked the chef-bot today:

i may add some more visual detail, but i'm pretty happy with the animation for now.

added an octopus sushi to the menu. also, there is some order UI now:

next, i want to add a rogue-like-ish upgrade path. after leveling up, you must choose between new menu items. these will have special effects, e.g., spicy sushi, where the customer will belch fire and clear out a row or column.
