It sounds neat, but not to a whole full compo. Maybe as an informal side-compo, like the writing compo.

I like t as a global compo idea. Adding some bizarre restrictions that you might believ only 3drealms could have thought of would make it even better. Perhaps including nods to balls of steel.

I think this would be a pretty cool idea, although there would probably be some legal/copyright problems as someone is going to end up with the Duke Nukem license. Maybe if it were done sort of like the bootleg demake compo where we make the next game in a fictional "Nuke Dukem" series which was never made by it's entirely fictional designer 3D Territory, which would, of course, be understood to be a stand in for Duke Nukem. EDIT: I'm Duke Nukem and I approve this compo.
Oh, I guess it won't be a problem then.

A vaporware competition might be fun. See who can create the most hype for a game that doesn't exist.

Man, I could imagine that would be a frustrating competition to watch happening. Looking at all the awesome ideas, complete with fake screen-shots photoshopped together and knowing that they're not going to be made. Then finally voting for the winner occurs. Every comment on the voting thread is "Here's my vote, you cold, heartless bastard that didn't make [insert awesome game name here]" Although perhaps a couple people would look at their ideas and begin thinking about them, and realize that they are doable. And suddenly a series of amazing indie games would begin coming out because the designers hadn't thought about how hard the game would be to design when they conceived of the idea. The sky had been the limit. They had raised the bar as high as they could make it, then reached for it. And a new golden era of indie games would begin. Either that or people would come up with a bunch of ridiculous joke game ideas. Either way, I'm giving my vote to "High Powered Wild Animal Cannon Vs. The Frogipult 2010"

I think a vaporware competition would be much more fitting than just fan games.

It seems like people already do this all the time in the form of mockups and started but unfinished games? It would be cool to have a compo dedicated to that though. Make up some awesome game and don't finish it on purpose. If you actually end up finishing (or even releasing something playable) you get disqualified .

Because when a company owns the rights, can are entitled to tell you to go fuck yourself, be you making any money or not. Different companies have different policies. Valve is extremely friendly, in my experience, to people parodying their stuff, like with their official support for Gang Garrison. Square-Enix are the dicks who killed every single Chrono Trigger fan remake there was long before CT DS was ever announced.
