Update #1 Weapon Test

Hi everyone,
We have upgraded the weapon system. Now guns fire physics-based projectiles which have velocity and mass. They will be affected by gravity and can bounce upon collision. Different types of weapon will have different attributes, for example plasma weapons can cause high damage but their projectile velocity is very low. You can even dodge a plasma projectile if you are fast enough. Or for example a traditional gas powered rifle have high projectile velocity but the bullet cannot damage heavily armored foes.

Update #3 Territories

Except metropolises, you will find a lot of interesting locations while exploring planets and some of them are populated territories such as settlements, mines, industrial complexes. They are often involved in territory wars between factions. You can own territories and build numerous structures such as accommodation, medical station, defenses, transportation pad, etc. Most locations will generate products or credits. You can increase location’s productivity by building infrastructures. Enemy factions will try to capture your territory sometimes, so you also need to build necessary defenses and hire security guards to protect your land.

Update #4 Metropolis

Metropolises or large cities are places that provides a lot of different interactions and entertainments for the player. You can do numerous things there for example, visiting clubs, trading, purchasing apartments or other kind of properties, registering a new organization, taking side-missions, attending a private noble party, meeting new people and etc. Most metropolises are neutral in political views and are not controlled by any factions. They are managed by the central united galactic government which is open to everyone. The street is patrolled by city police and any crime will be punished. Metropolises are interesting places and are often where your dreams will come true.

Update #5 Defending Territory

If you own any territory(settlements, mines, factories…), your enemies will sometimes try to attack it and you are in charge of defending it. You will receive a warning before the attack so you will have plenty of time to prepare. You can hire local security personnel and construct defensive structures to help defend. If you don’t show up when enemy attacks, the local security forces will defend the territory by themselves. If you know where the enemy forces are coming from, you can also intercept them before they reach your territory.

Update #6 Planets

We original plan to make around six unique planets in this version(new planets may come in future updates). All planets are carefully crafted with unique terrain, creatures, stories and places to visit. We don’t want our planets to look repetitive and we have spent a lot of time on designing to make each of them stands out. So far we have Keria(Earth like planet), Arcana(Ice planet), Erion(Earth like grassland planet), Celestra(Ice covered night planet), Anta(Desert planet) and Medo(Small rocky planet). There would be plenty of hidden places and lore waiting for you to discover!

Update #7 Player Homes

The player can purchase homes on different planets. Most of them are located in major cities.

Homes can be used for the following things:
  • Sleep to recover health and energy.
  • Play some musics and relax from the journey.
  • Build storage space to store items.
  • Build extra room for companions.
  • Build utilities such as virtual reality combat simulator(used for gaining some extra experience points) or a medical station to help heal wounds faster.
  • Build workshops to craft something(Not yet planned in development. Crafting may become a feature in the future).
  • Build decorations, just to get more cozy like a real home.
  • You will gain experience points and renown for purchasing and upgrading home.

Player homes will bring some extra fun to you. It is definitely not something you cannot live without but it is cool to have some. We will go into greater details about home functions in future updates.

Update #8 Galactic Events

Everyday there would be some new events happening in the galaxy. They can be something small such as a new discovery of an ancient ruin on planet X or something really big such as faction A declared war on faction B. You will receive daily updates on these events through a newsletter channel called the Galactic News. Events will give you some important information and sometimes provide new tasks but you will have the freedom to decide what to do about them. For example in an event of “Pirate invasion of settlement X”, the player can go to help the settlers defend their territory or help the pirates and get your share of looted profits. The event system will add one extra layer of fun and dynamic to gameplay and increase re-playability because most events have certain degree of random generation.

Update #10 Trading system

Where there is war, there is weapon business.
Smuggling weapons, luxury goods such as jewelry from planets to planets can be profitable but risky. You may encounter many difficulties such as pirates and vicious animals. You will need some extra securities for doing such business.

Update #12 Going into space

FSE(Freeman: Star Edge) treats space and ground equally. You will be able to personally fly your ship in the beautiful universe and engage in fascinating space combat. There are many interesting places you could go in the space. For example, an abandoned space station, ancient space battle zone full of ship wrecks, mining station, etc. You can land/dock on most space objects you find and commence a ground expedition. You can buy new ships from a ship yard and even have your own fleet.

Update #13 What is Freeman?

What is Freeman? General Game Structure Revealed “Exiled to the edge of a Galaxy full of danger and opportunity; will you become a mercenary, hunting down outlaws? Or will you raise an army to conquer the Galaxy? You could simply explore the surrounding planets, capped with magnificent landscapes. While the game provides ultimate freedom through gameplay, the player will always be challenged by certain missions and goals.”

In general, gameplay is broken down into two parts: Exploration and combat. The game blends these two parts smoothly and lets the player choose how to play the game. When starting a new game, the player will be asked a few questions to determine the character’s initial attributes, equipment and the initial state of the dynamic game-world. Then the customization window will allow the player to tweak the facial features of the character. Galactic traveling is handled by point and click on the “Galactic View”, an over-world map which displays all locations and fleets. When encountering a fleet or location, the player can choose between engaging it or approaching it peacefully. The player can land on most planets and space stations for the ground expedition or fly around to explore the local space. There are many places to be discovered, such as caves, ruins, bandit camps and others. Most of them are dungeon-like locations filled with dangerous enemies, traps and handsome rewards. There are many things you can do during exploration, mining, visiting different places, trading or you can commit crimes like stealing or raiding. Experiences can be gained through combat and other activities such as completing a mission. The player has multiple slots for customizing equipment load out. Upon leveling up, the player can improve the character’s ability by assigning skill points. The player can take control of any habitable planets or space stations by eliminating all enemy fleets and ground forces guarding the planet/station. Multiple options such as building military or economic structures and training security forces will be provided to increase income and security of the owned planets. Eventually, the player can build up an incredible fleet and ground army to conquer the universe.

Update #14 Combat

Freeman: Star Edge features both space combat and ground combat. Space combat takes place when encountering hostile fleets on the galactic map and attacking hostile fleets guarding a planet or a space station. Ground combat happens when encountering enemy ground forces on planets or space stations or during a boarding combat. Ground combat also includes random encounter of beasts and bandits during exploration. During space combat, the player will use mouse and keyboard to fly a spaceship and attack with lasers, missiles and torpedoes. The player can hire multiple wingman squadrons to assist in a combat.

Both third person mode and the first person mode are available for ground combat. The player can fight alone or lead an army into ground combat. The player can issue commands to companion squads through strategy map. There are various types of weapon to choose from, each with different damage, recoil, firing speed, projectile speed and armor penetration. Combat can always be avoided by hiding. Conducting crimes such as stealing, attacking people on a neutral ground can also trigger ground combat. You can take control of a planet of a space station by eliminating all enemy forces defending the area.

Update #15 Space Traveling

Space traveling takes place on the galactic map from which the player needs to select a destination by point and click. Then the player’s fleet will traverse to the destination with a speed that is affected by the player fleet’s current condition. When the player arrives at the destination, the detail information of the destination will show up.

From here the player can get the most important information about the destination including the size of explorable space, type of planet, enemy force presence, dominating faction and so on. The player has several options to choose from, for example, land on the planet or explore the near-orbit space. Most planets/stations can be landed on, except for inhabitable planets such as a gas giant. When exploring the galactic map, the player will often be challenged by the random encounter of enemy fleets, which usually end up in a space combat. The player’s negotiation skill sometimes can help avoid combat by talking. This space traveling system allows the player to quickly traverse to any places and to focus on more detailed and explorable regional space or planets, without having to spend too much time traveling through empty space.

Wowee, how big is the team on this monster of a project?!

This looks cool, if insanely ambitious. Definitely cautiously optimistic over here.

Kind of seems like mount&blade in space :D
