I'm in a humanities field, yet I run a forum frequented by tech nerds. what does that say about me?
This is what I see as the primary issue plaguing tech types - not so a case of being asocial, since many programmers seem to be able to socialize fine with their peers and coworkers - but a lack of any kind of respect or awareness of broader social issues. The smug superiority STEMlords feel over the humanities is misguided at best and toxic at worst. These are the same people who confidently assert that people like Elon Musk are going to save the world; if they cared at all about labor dynamics and knew anything about how flawed the Great Man Theory view of history was, they'd know that ruthless capitalists aren't going to save us. If they knew anything about subconscious biases and the importance of recognizing them, they might realize that machine learning isn't some divine, objective tool, and that an AI designed by someone with those subconscious biases is likely to have them baked into its design. |

you have to have a very high IQ to post on TIGSource. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical shitposting metaphysics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head. There's also Joe's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Nier Automata literature, for instance. The regulars understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE.

my deep and abiding shame is creating an on line catch phrase which just wont die and so far only two people have found out that it was me. one of those was this marketing guy and it was an even worse experience than getting an infection from a colonoscopy.
