coder here, not an artist
I really struggle with finding the right colors and lighting

this scene happens during breakfast, in the morning. how can I improve the 'morning light' feeling?

Morning (and evening) light has a golden hue - can you make the light shining through the window slightly more yellow?  Also - need to check how this looks - make the light shaft more horizontal - the sun has just risen, presumably.

Also - not sure what you are going for, but can you add more cues that it is breakfast time?  E.g. a clock?  Maybe a newspaper & boiled eggs / bowl of cornflakes?

thanks!
i'll play with the light shaft hue. but i feel the whole room has to change
in end there will be characters eating breakfast, so stuff on the table etc.
clock is great idea, maybe I could swap it with the framed picture on the wall

i think its hard to convey any mood with shading like that so it can be left as it is

cheap lazy way to change the vibe of the whole room, make it more golden morningy. Slap a gradient over the top of it with the colours you want for the lighting/shadow, set it to overlay and play with the opacity.

I actually really like the color scheme on the original, I think the easiest way to sell 'morning' would be to alngle the light a bit more horizontally, and then pop some warm highlights on the surfaces catching that light beam. I'd also warm up the window itself, or maybe add a bit of a (really) subtle glow.

quick and dirty paintover:

I might also recommend cooling down the non-highlights on the fridge.

EDIT: this ten second paintover looks really silly at res :p if you zoom it out a lot you'll see what i'm talking about a bit better

in the meantime, I need the same scene in the evening. I've arrived to this
what do you think?

assume there is a candle on the table, and a lamp on the roof

Gosh, what an appealing scene . . . Tongue

The problem is it's not lighting, it's just a flat spot. To have lighting you need to have form. You need to simplify your character into basic forms: boxes, spheres, cylinders, pyramids. Then you need to think about which direction the light is from, and which direction the surface of the form is facing. The more directly a surface is facing a light, the more that surface will be illuminated. If a surface is facing away from a light source, it can not recieve any light from that source (unless the light bounces off another surface first).
