Aquaponics Life is a management/simulation game in which you manage an aquaponics urban farm. You will decide & manage a lot of plants and fish and survive in the town as the best urban farmer.

Hi! We are Maulidan Games from Indonesia! As the next attempt to survive in the b2c industry (after our struggle in our two previous game, where we gain and learn a lot of precious experience in MSTD and Legion Tale, also the upcoming Lobster Empire), we decided to start another simulation game. Another strive to sharpen our rapid development method.   

So why aquaponics?

Since the lead designer is someone who experienced in creating a management/simulation game and having a great love for nature (some of us even will take the study of aquaponics for the game into a real application), and also we have created a programming's technique to rapid develops a management/simulation game (it also compatible with other genres, but it needs further testing), we decide to create the Aquaponics Life.

The inspiration

Game Dev Tycoon, Empire TV Tycoon, Kindergarten, and some other tycoon games. Manage and nurture a business and control all the details to keep the customers back. It was cool and we wanted to recreate that same feeling and experience. Also, we want to introduce a simplified style urban farming like aquaponics to the player and maybe we can transmit our amazement of aquaponics to all the players.

Mechanic

At first, we decided to create the prototype of our mechanic using the Machinations. It was truly a wonderful software created by Joris Dormans and Ernest Adams. This is our first prototype for the mechanic of Aquaponics Life.


It still needs a lot of improvement, but for now, we stick with these mechanics. We will write more later in the next post. Basically it is the game economy mechanics, where the middle circle with yellow text is the money, the red shapes are maintenance cost of the aquaponics system and more.

We also still not fully implemented the core concept about the aquaponics. Our assistant designer creating our own "causal loop" of the core concept in the aquaponics while learning it from some resources online. We using online tool Draw IO. We will create another post about this loop.

Technical Info

We started the Aquaponics Life in the September with almost all of current members plotted to finish it. We still using Flash to create the game, as we see it still as a powerful software for this kind of game. We also already developed a new programming technique to fasten our development cycle. We will also talk about this in the different post.

Our pixel artist mainly worked with aseprite and photoshop. We use frame-by-frame animation.

We are currently working on having a playable version as fast as possible. We are aiming for a commercial release on PC at the moment. We are not planning on a mobile/tablet release.
